It's fun to see our furry friends living their best lives!
Today's of the Friendship Haven Times features a special duo that makes the rounds and delights residents and team members alike.
For Gary Knox, daily walks are not optional. They are simply part of life with Angel.
“We usually take about five or six walks a day,” Gary shared with a laugh. “First thing in the morning, mid to late morning, after lunch, late afternoon, early evening, and then again before bed.” Occasionally, Angel even wakes him in the middle of the night. “I figure I don’t want to have a mess to clean up,” he said, “so I get dressed and take her out.”
During the winter months, their routine shifts indoors. They step outside briefly, then come back in to walk the halls of Friendship Haven. And Angel makes sure those walks include plenty of stops. “She wants to visit everybody,” Gary said. “She’s such a cute little dog, she attracts everybody, and she’s gotten used to that. She thinks that’s the way it’s supposed to be.”
As they pass through the hallways, Gary watches for smiles or outstretched hands. If someone in a wheelchair cannot quite reach, he gently lifts Angel up to make the visit easier. “They are so happy to pet her,” he said. Angel also knows exactly which offices and residents keep treats on hand. “She definitely knows that,” Gary smiled. “She was walking down a row of walkers and stopped at one that had dog treats.”
Angel, a Maltese who will turn 12 in April, is still active and eager for attention. Gary jokes that she fits right in at Kenyon Place. “We think she’s getting a little hard of hearing,” he said. “Maybe a bit of arthritis, too.” Still, she keeps them both moving.
Gary, Angel, and Jenise Knox have lived at Kenyon Place for about two years. While downsizing was an adjustment, the daily walks have helped anchor their routine. More than exercise, the walks provide purpose. “She forces me to get out when I don’t want to get out,” Gary said. “When I’d rather sit in the recliner, she makes me keep moving.”
And once he does, the benefits multiply. “Once I get out and start talking to people, it brightens their day, and it brightens my day.”
At Friendship Haven, even a simple walk down the hallway becomes something more. It becomes movement, conversation, laughter, and a daily highlight. When warmer weather returns, Gary and Angel will take advantage of the approximately 1.5 miles of paved trail on campus. But whether inside during winter or outside in spring, their routine reflects something bigger: healthy aging is supported not only by staying active, but by being surrounded by people who smile when you walk by.
And if Angel notices you want to pet her, don’t worry. Gary will stop.
