Compost Is Habitat, Not Fertilizer

Compost isn’t just plant food.

It’s microbe food.

Healthy soil is alive with bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, and countless other organisms. These tiny workers break down organic matter and make nutrients available to plants.

Compost feeds that entire underground community.

When you add compost, you’re not force-feeding plants.

You’re building a system that feeds plants naturally.

That’s a very different mindset.

Less chasing deficiencies.
More building biology.

And biology does the heavy lifting.

Bare Soil Is a Problem

In nature, soil is almost never left naked.

It’s covered with plants.
Leaves.
Roots.
Organic matter.

Bare soil dries out faster.
Erodes easier.
Heats up more.
Loses life.

Covering soil is one of the most foundational regenerative practices.

That can look like:
• Mulch
• Compost
• Living plants
• Cover crops

Covered soil stays cooler, holds moisture better, and supports microbial life.

If you do nothing else in your garden this season, cover your soil.

It makes everything easier.

Observation Is a Gardening Skill

We tend to think of gardening skills as tools and techniques.

But one of the most important skills costs nothing:

Paying attention.

Watch where water pools after rain.
Notice which spots dry out first.
See where frost lingers in spring.
Notice which plants look happy without much effort.

These observations tell you more than any product label ever could.

Good gardeners aren’t the ones who know everything.

They’re the ones who notice patterns and adjust.

Your garden will teach you — if you give it the chance.

Stop Fighting Your Soil Type

One of the most freeing moments in gardening is realizing you don’t need to “fix” your soil.

Clay soil.
Sandy soil.
Rocky soil.

None of them are broken.

Each soil type has strengths. Each has challenges. Regenerative gardening starts by working with what you have instead of trying to turn it into something else.

Clay soils hold nutrients well but can struggle with drainage.
Sandy soils drain quickly but benefit from added organic matter.

Neither is wrong.

Adding compost, mulch, and organic matter over time improves any soil type. Not overnight. Not in one season. Slowly.

Healthy soil is built, not installed.

Sunlight Isn’t Just “Full Sun or Shade”

Most gardening advice simplifies sunlight into neat categories.

Full sun.
Partial sun.
Shade.

Real life is more nuanced.

Morning sun is gentle.
Afternoon sun is intense.
Seasonal sun angles change everything.

A plant that thrives in full sun in a cooler climate may struggle with full afternoon sun in a hotter one.

This is why observation matters more than labels.

Notice:
• How many hours of sun a space gets
• What time of day that sun arrives
• How plants respond

If something struggles, it doesn’t mean you failed.

It may simply be in the wrong light.

• What time of day does the sun arrive? It changes everything.

Microclimates: The Hidden Helpers in Your Garden

Not every part of your garden experiences the same conditions.

A south-facing wall holds heat.
A fence blocks wind.
A low spot collects cold air.
A tree creates afternoon shade.

These small differences are called microclimates, and learning to notice them can dramatically improve success.

Instead of treating your yard as one uniform space, think of it as many small environments.

Warm spots for heat-loving plants.
Sheltered spots for tender crops.
Shadier areas for greens and herbs.

Observation is your best tool.

Spend time watching where sun lingers, where frost settles, and where soil stays moist.

A fence blocks the wind.where the sun lingers, where frost settles, and where soil stays moist.

Why Local Seeds Matter More Than You Think

Seeds carry memory.

They remember the climate they were grown in.
They remember the stresses they survived.
They remember what it took to thrive.

Seeds produced locally or regionally are often better adapted to your conditions than seeds shipped from far away.

That means:
• Better germination
• Stronger plants
• Less struggle

When possible, look for:
Local seed companies
Seed swaps
Garden clubs
Neighbors who save seed

Over time, you can even begin saving seed from plants that perform well in your own garden.

They remember the climate they grew up in. resilience — one generation of plants at a time.

Your Climate Is the Boss (And That’s Okay)

One of the biggest sources of frustration in gardening comes from trying to grow like we live somewhere else.

Different climates shape what is possible. They influence growing seasons, water needs, pest pressure, and which plants naturally thrive.

Regenerative gardening begins with acceptance.

Acceptance of your frost dates.
Acceptance of heat or cold.
Acceptance of rain patterns, wind, and seasonal extremes.

When we stop fighting our climate and start working with it, gardening becomes easier.

Instead of asking, “How do I force this to work?”
We begin asking, “What already grows well here?”

That shift saves time, money, water, and a whole lot of disappointment.

Your climate is not a limitation.
It’s a blueprint.
