This year's theme: Endless Compassion, Expert Care; Celebrating the Soul of Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary Technicians embody the perfect balance of endless compassion and expert care! Across general practice, emergency care, specialty care, education, research, public health, and beyond, Veterinary Technicians bring advanced knowledge, technical expertise, steady leadership, and deep compassion to every patient, client, colleague, and community they serve!

Here at Paws 'n Claws, most of our clients see our technicians in the exam rooms helping hold your pets so our doctors can perform exam, administer vaccines, etc. However, veterinary technicians do so much more!

Veterinary Technicians perform blood draws, prepare patients for surgery, help monitor anesthesia, care for patients recovering from surgery, run laboratory diagnostics, get medications ready, help perform dental cleanings and procedures, get x-ray images done on patients, offer a comforting hand to our patients and clients, and so many more daily duties required to keep a clinic operating smoothly. Our veterinary technicians are the beating heart of our hospital.

It's almost Halloween!!!

Costumes, masks, lights, decorations, and a constant parade of strangers coming to your door.....Halloween can be a downright spooky experience for pets.

You can protect your pets by taking these steps to reduce the risk of them being hurt, accidentally poisoned, or lost.

Don't feed pets Halloween treats. Many ingredients in Halloween treats, such as chocolate, artificial sweeteners, and raisins can be very toxic to pets. Often, you won’t be able to tell what a treat or piece of candy contains just by looking at it.

Make sure your pets have identification (microchip, collar, ID tag) that will make it easy for someone to contact you and return them home in case they escape through an open door while you're distracted with trick-or-treaters.

Keep lit candles, jack-o-lanterns, and other Halloween decorations out of reach of pets.

Keep all human costume pieces away from pets, along with glow sticks, decorations, batteries, and other holiday items. Costume parts and decorations might cause choking, internal injury, or illness.

If your pet is wary of strangers or has a tendency to bite, put them in a room away from the front door during trick-or-treating hours, or provide them with a safe hiding place.

Keep your pets indoors.

If you plan to put a costume on your pet, make sure it follows these guidelines:

- Fits properly and is comfortable

- Doesn't have any pieces that can easily be chewed off or cause choking

- Doesn't block your pet's sight, hearing, breathing, mouth, or movement

- Take time before Halloween to get your pet accustomed to the costume, and never leave a costumed pet unsupervised

Paws 'n Claws Veterinary Clinic is hiring!

We have an opening for a full-time veterinary technician. We are a small animal clinic in north Fort Collins seeking a qualified individual for a veterinary assistant/technician position. 1 year of animal experience preferred, but we are willing to train the right person with related experience. Full time, Monday through Friday with some alternating Saturday shifts.

We are looking for someone who possesses the following qualities:

- Compassionate and caring manner with clients and pets

- Good phone skills

- Professional attitude and appearance

- Attention to detail is a must

- Ability to correctly enter and maintain medical records

- Competent in all aspects of small animal surgery, dental evaluation and cleaning, in-house laboratory work (bloodwork, f***l analysis, urinalysis, etc.), patient care, radiology (general and dental), IV catheter placement, anesthesia monitoring, etc.

- Must be able to communicate with clients in exam rooms, over the phone, and provide excellent customer service

- Need to understand the importance of each client and patient to our business and treat both with the highest level of care, competence, warmth, and professionalism

August is National Dog Month!!!!!

During the month of August, National Dog Month celebrates our loveable canine pals smack in the middle of the dog days of summer. Whether your dog burrows under the blankets with you at night, plays in the sprinkler, or alerts you to a health need, we know they are constantly improving our lives and making them more fun.

Dogs are the #1 most commonly owned pets on the planet, and with good reason. Studies prove our canine companions make us happier, less stressed, and more optimistic. The list of benefits to spending time with a dog goes on and on.

The companionship and affection we share with them make their lives better, too. Dog lovers know a life without dogs is a life missing something special, and that’s a fact worth celebrating!

How can you celebrate National Dog Month? This is the easy part. Celebrate with your best pals. Take an extra-long walk. Play fetch or spare an extra treat. Get your dog the toy he/she has been wanting or visit the dog park. Donate to your local shelter or to a larger dog non-profit. Not only will the dogs appreciate the support, but so will their future human companions.

Did you know that Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is one of the most common infectious diseases in cats?

It is a contagious retrovirus that weakens a cat’s immune system, making it very hard for them to fight off everyday infections.

How it spreads:
- Close contact like mutual grooming
- Sharing food and water bowls
- Bite wounds from infected cats
- Mother to kittens

*Note: FeLV is strictly a cat virus and cannot be passed to humans or dogs!

Signs to watch for:
- Weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Low energy or lethargy
- Frequent or recurring infections
- Pale gums or poor coat condition

How to keep cats safe:
- Regular testing
- Keeping cats safely indoors
- Staying up to date on the FeLV vaccine for indoor/outdoor cats

Kennel Cough Awareness

Just like kids can pick up colds at school, dogs that spend time around other dogs can sometimes be exposed to kennel cough.

Kennel cough is a common respiratory illness that spreads easily in social settings such as daycare, boarding, grooming, dog parks, and training classes.

Signs to watch for include:
- Persistent dry or honking cough
- Sneezing or nasal discharge
- Mild lethargy
- Decreased appetite

Most cases are mild and self-limiting, especially in dogs that have been vaccinated against kennel cough. In some cases, if dogs are continuing to worsen, develop a fever, and just don't seem to be getting any better on their own, medical intervention can help them feel better faster.

If your dog goes to daycare, boarding, grooming, dog parks, or training classes, and develops any of the symptoms mentioned above, please keep them home and contact us for guidance.

Keeping sick dogs away from group play helps protect all of our four-legged friends and allows your dog time to rest and recover.
