Tracheal collapse is a condition where the cartilage rings in the trachea (windpipe) weaken and flatten when air is drawn into the airway during inspiration. Tracheal collapse makes it difficult for air to get to the lungs. The most common clinical sign is a persistent, dry, harsh cough. It is sometimes described as a ‘goose honk’ cough. The cough may worsen at night, with excitement, with pressure on the trachea, such as from a collar, during hot or humid weather, or immediately after eating or drinking. Dogs of any age and any breed can develop this condition, but smaller dogs and older dogs are more prone. Enlarged heart can be one underlying cause of tracheal collapse, so if you suspect your dog has developed this cough, it is important to seek an evaluation by a veterinarian.
