Chinese herbal formulas can be the difference between suffering or a good quality of life for your pet.

Some dogs are picky eaters (like my Wee Mrs. Fitz here). She doesn't like the taste of herbs. But if I mix them in a bit of baby food (she likes chicken, turkey, or ham - beef, not so much) she gobbles them up! Getting her back on Chinese herbs has made a huge difference in her vitality.

DOGS OF THE WEST HIGHLAND WAY: Siku
While the rest of us were bundled up against the relentless wind on Rannoch Moor, Siku was thrilled with the cool temps and the wind blowing his fur.

Rawhide is bad, mmmkay?

Please do not buy. Throw them away if your dog gets one as a gift. Giving rawhide to a dog is never a good idea.

Many of these so called treats end up with the dog "enjoying" some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas. The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulfide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell.

Now comes the pretty festive colors and the glue to form cute shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde.

If that wasn't bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Get guidance for feeding your pet REAL food. The very first step in solving skin problems in your dog or cat is to feed them a balanced diet of WHOLE foods - real food, not ultra processed kibble. Even if you just add toppers to the kibble or reduce kibble by 25 - 50%, you'll see the improvement in your pet's skin.

DOGS OF THE WEST HIGHLAND WAY: Echo & Jambo
The most wonderful thing about photographing the dogs we met along the trek on the West Highland Way was how their humans lit up with pride when I asked if I could take their dog's photo. Every owner we met was delighted to show off their furry companion(s). Jambo & Echo are a mother & daughter duo that live for walks with their human along the old drover's road that makes up this part of the WHW. They are helping their beloved human recover from a stroke, so they get her out on the trail every day.

DOGS OF THE WEST HIGHLAND WAY: Lucy. I should have gotten a video of Lucy trotting along the trail next to her human, Scott. She adores Scott! Look at how she gazes at him! She couldn't take her eyes off him. Scott and Lucy are the sweetest pair, and it warmed our hearts to see their love. Lucy would follow her Scott anywhere. πŸ’š

DOGS OF THE WEST HIGHLAND WAY

Rose is a local and walks these trails most days with her owner. She doesn't understand the fuss about The West Highland Way and thinks all our gear and backpacks are silly. But she is happy we are enjoying her backyard and she wishes us a smooth journey 😍

DOGS OF THE WEST HIGHLAND WAY

Tilly (black & white smooth coat border collie) and her brother Bert (terrier mix) were the first dogs we met this week on the West Highland Way 🐢🐢

Bert always has a great day on the trail. Tilly is very proud of the fact that she is a border collie that doesn't have to work sheep. Her owner says she likes to tease working border collies with the fact that she lives the life of luxury whenever they pass a working croft on their hikes.
