Hey Everyone!
Quick update on the EHV1/EHM situation. It is looking like we are on the backside of the outbreak and things will hopefully be continuing to calm down over the next few days and weeks. There are still NO confirmed cases in Wyoming or Utah but for those traveling, be aware that import requirements have changed in some states. It may take longer to get heath certificates and entry permit numbers approved. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. 307-782-6566

Hey everyone!
Just wanted to update you on the EHV-1 webinar from last night. This is a serious and rapidly evolving situation, but there’s no reason to panic — especially locally.
If you’ve traveled to or been with horses that went to an affected event, please reach out to us about testing and next steps. As of 11/21/25 there are no confirmed cases of EHV-1/EHM in Wyoming.
Confirmed neurologic (EHM) cases have been reported in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Colorado and New Mexico.
For accurate, real-time updates, please check the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC). If you are planning to travel, stay alert: event cancellations and entry requirements are changing quickly.
We’ll keep you updated as things develop. Be smart, stay safe, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions!
Thanks!
Margi (Dr. White)

Note on the CO positive horse - this horse was at events in Cheyenne and Wheatland Wyoming earlier this month. That does not mean that every horse is exposed but if you were at those events please follow precautions.

The Equine Disease Communication Center is monitoring an outbreak of EHM that originated at the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event Nov 5-9. To date, officially confirmed cases have been reported in the following states:

Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) Update for Southwest Wyoming & surrounding areas:

We want to keep our community informed about the developing EHV-1 outbreak affecting parts of Texas and Oklahoma. At this time, there are no confirmed cases in Wyoming or Utah.

However, equine travel plans and event schedules are changing rapidly, with shows and competitions being postponed or cancelled nationwide.

Our veterinarians will be attending a webinar this evening to stay current on the situation and review the most up-to-date biosecurity recommendations. We will share updated information tomorrow as we learn more.

If you have questions or are planning to travel with your horses in the near future, or have traveled to any affected areas in the last few weeks, please don’t hesitate to call Uinta Veterinary Hospital at (307) 782-6566 or Castle Rock Veterinary Hospital at (307) 875-7188.

Be smart, stay safe, and remember—there’s no need to panic. We’re here to help keep your animals safe and your mind at ease.

What is Equine Herpesvirus (EHV)?

You've probably heard it called Rhinopneumonitis, a respiratory tract disease that results in "snotty noses," but EHV is more than that. Depending on the strain, this virus can also cause abortion in broodmares, and equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) — the often-deadly neurologic form of the disease.

Because EHV is endemic in many equine populations, most mature horses have developed some immunity through repeated natural infection. However, they remain a source of infection for other susceptible horses, like weaned foals and yearlings, who usually display symptoms of the respiratory form of the disease in autumn and winter. Performance and show horses are also more vulnerable to the disease, as they commingle with unfamiliar equines in close quarters while under stress from travel and competition.

Proper biosecurity protocols can help reduce EHV outbreaks and other disease transmission. A variety of vaccines are also available for protection against both the respiratory and abortive form of the disease, but there is no equine licensed vaccine at this time that has a label claim for protection against the neurologic form (EHM).

Consult your primary equine veterinarian to learn more about this disease and work with them to determine the optimal vaccine protocol for your horses.

You can learn more about all three forms on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website here: https://equinediseasecc.org/infectious-diseases

Passion for Veterinary Medicine

Ben and Andrea Osborne have owned Uinta Veterinary Hospital for 6 years. We enjoy living in the Bridger Valley where we can offer progressive and quality medicine! Ben and Andrea not only run a business but try to be involved in the community whenever possible by volunteering to coach, teaching courses through the Valley Learning Center, at our local preschools and school districts and donating to programs around the valley to help them run successfully.

We have learned by owning a business that it is important to be part of the community whenever possible. It is important to try and inspire the smaller children and teenagers that may have a love for animals and veterinary medicine.

Uinta Veterinary Hospital has an excellent team of staff! You couldn’t ask for a better team of people to care for your pets and provide the attention to detail that each one gets on a daily basis. Uinta Veterinary Hospital has many services it provides on a daily basis, including but not limited to routine surgeries such as spay and neuters, orthopedic surgeries and soft tissue surgeries, equine chiropractic, acupuncture, large and small animal dentals, herd health and regulatory services, laser therapy on large and small animals, among many other services.

We love to see our pet patients and their owners and hope to provide them with the best experience possible. If any time you have any problems with our business, feel free to call and discuss this with Ben or Andrea because we can’t provide the best service possible when we don’t receive feedback when there may have been a problem. Thank you for supporting our business, as it means we can support our family, employ people in the Bridger Valley, and support the community and give back!
