This guy, 29 years old, just won the highest award in the colored pencil world. He did not give up! He did not say "that's good enough..." This man spent over A THOUSAND HOURS on this piece of art.
Please keep one thing in mind when you order from an artist. Sometimes greatness takes a long time. You wouldn't expect a landscaper to spend 20+ hrs manicuring your yard and only expect to pay them $25. You get what you pay for. If you want excellence, it's going to take TIME and more than $2/hour.
I'm not just selling a piece of art, I'm exchanging hours I could've spent playing with my children, working on other pursuits, etc. Pay an artist what they are worth. You'll be very glad you did and walk away with something everyone else will be envious of!!!
WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!
I cannot believe I'm telling you this, “Undercurrents" won the CIPPY AWARD for BEST OF SHOW in the CPSA Colored Pencil Society of America's 28th International Exhibition!!!! This is the very HIGHEST award for colored pencil in the WORLD!!! With a piece I made at 29, I think I'm the youngest person to receive this honor!
Over the last 6 years I have entered this show, competing against the world's best colored pencil artists. Since 2015 this has been my biggest dream. This year was the most competitive of the years I’ve entered with almost 800 entries from across the planet!
Years ago I lost my first solo show in a fire and my goal began to feel so far away. At one point I even began to feel sorry for myself. I later decided to fight back again to the very best of my ability. It was an act of faith in what I once knew. That those feelings could live inside me once again. My self belief began to come back very slowly. I had to prove myself to myself. Last year I made “Abyss” which was the a turning point. The biggest thing this has taught me is the importance of persistence. This was my third time spending over 1,000 hours on a piece.
I still have so much more to reach with my art and achieve for colored pencil. This has been the most incredible experience in my art journey yet.
I want to thank my wife Kinsey for constantly encouraging me when I felt down, my parents for all their love support especially when I was at my lowest a few years ago, Mago and Richard at RJD Gallery for encouraging me to be brave enough to pursue an exciting new direction for my art, my models Jackie and Lucas for their willingness to pose together, Vera Curnow for making my favorite art group in the world, the many many talented artists of my CPSA family who have challenged and inspired me over the last few years, but most of all for welcoming me in and sharing in our greatest passion.
