🐓 Let’s Talk About Ornamental Chicken Breeds 🐓
Here at Sweet Cluckin’ Farmstead, we proudly breed four ornamental breeds:
✨ Silkies
✨ D’Uccles
✨ Polish
✨ Booted Bantams
These breeds are beautiful, unique, and full of personality — but they are NOT beginner chickens.
Ornamental breeds have very different needs than standard laying breeds and large fowl. Mixing them with larger birds can put them at serious risk for injury, stress, and even death. These tiny birds do best with other ornamental breeds and thrive in flocks of similar size and temperament.
When we ask questions before placing chicks and older birds, we are not trying to tell anyone how to run their flock. We ask because we care deeply about the lives we’ve brought into the world and want every bird set up for success. Ornamental breeds have unique needs, and making sure they are placed in the right environment helps them thrive for years to come.
A few things many people don’t realize about ornamental breeds:
🥣 They often require specialized feeding and extra nutritional support.
💊 Vitamin supplementation can make a huge difference in growth, feather quality, and overall health.
🪳 They can be more prone to mites and lice, so regular monitoring and treatment are important.
🪽 Our Silkies and Polish are intentionally bred for large crests, which can create challenges with vision, finding food, and escaping danger.
🌡️ Ornamental breeds are extra sensitive to both heat and cold weather extremes.
🐣 Silkies are especially slow to feather as chicks, making temperature management very important during growth.
🦶 Silkies, D’Uccles, and Booted Bantams all have feathered feet, which means muddy or consistently wet conditions can quickly lead to health and cleanliness issues.
🍽️ Ornamental breeds can easily be bullied away from food and water by larger, more aggressive birds.
🦅 Many ornamental breeds have limited flight ability and reduced visibility, making them more vulnerable to predators.
We do not free range our ornamental breeds because they are simply too vulnerable. Their small size, limited visibility from heavy crests, feathered feet, and gentle nature make them easy targets for predators and bullying from larger birds.
Our coops and runs are built like fortresses — designed to keep our birds safely in and predators firmly out. Secure housing is one of the most important parts of keeping ornamental breeds healthy and protected.
At this time, we do not vaccinate our birds, though that may change in the future as our program grows.
We want every family bringing home our birds to feel prepared and confident before they ever leave our farm. Ornamental breeds have unique needs, and education is one of the best tools for helping them thrive. So please — don’t be shy about asking questions. We are always happy to share what has worked for us and help set both you and your birds up for success. ❤️
