Hey REAL DOGS REAL DAYS FANS.
Midweek check and useful tip for off leash success.

The transition from car to off leash is one of those moments most people skip right past — and it's worth paying attention to.
A little structure before the freedom makes the whole experience better for both of you. Lower arousal, stronger connection, and a dog that actually wants to explore with you instead of without you.

Hey REAL DOGS REAL DAYS FANS
Its spring and the best time to prepare our dogs for off leash summer fun!
Before you take your dog somewhere off leash where you can't control the environment — do you know if they're ready for that responsibility?
Test their skills somewhere familiar. Enclosed. Low stakes.
Do they wait to be released after crossing a threshold? Are they interested in what you're doing? If you hide, do they come find you? If you engage with them, do they engage back? Can you call them away from an exciting distraction? Will they come when it's time to leave?
These are the building blocks of a dog who can handle being off leash in the real world.
Mostly yes — great. Not yet — work on the skill that's lacking.
Now you know. Before it really matters.

"Just make it exist first. You can make it good later."

Start somewhere. Start messy. Start with whatever you've got. We get so caught up in doing it right that we never get started. Stop waiting until conditions are perfect — the behavior isn't going to build itself. Good comes later. But only if you start.

Hey Real Dogs Real Days Fans!

MY TAKE!

Food rewards get a bad rap. But when you understand why they work, they stop being a crutch and start being one of the smartest tools you have. Here are 10 reasons I use them and why I think you should too!

Mid-week check-in...
This month we've been proving you can teach any dog new tricks — and this week's before and after is what consistent practice actually looks like. Not overnight. Not dramatic. Just better than where we started.
Games woven into the walk. Proximity rewarded. A dog figuring out where he wants to be. Practice makes progress, and good enough is great!
That's the whole series right there.

Hey Real Dogs Real Days fans — this week we're going out for a walk.
The games don't stay in the driveway. They come with you. A check-in here, a reward for being close there — woven into the walk consistently, a little at a time. You're not stopping to train. You're not waiting for something to go wrong. You're just dropping games in as you go, keeping Galli engaged and keeping the value alive in the place where it actually matters.
That's what's preventing the pull. Not corrections. Not management. Games that taught him close is worth something — and a walk where he gets to keep practicing that.
Good enough is great. This is what training with games looks like in real life — a dog making his own choices about where to be.

Hey Real Dog Real Days Fans
Your Midweek Check-In —
this week we've been playing on-leash games with Galli, and I want to share one that's been really useful.
Inside turns. Walk a square with 90-degree turns and pivots. Or try a small circle with your dog in the center, rewarding them for staying at your side the whole way around.
Walks aren't just straight lines. Dogs that learn to move with you — to stay close when you shift direction — end up being a lot easier to walk. These games build that without ever leaving your driveway.
One game. One skill. Real walks get easier.

REAL DOGS DEAL DAYS
Swapping old habits for new ones. 🐾
The leash used to mean pulling and excitement. Now we're changing that story. On-leash games that teach the leash cues, build value for being close, and prepare Galli for the actual walk — without the draw of hard distractions. Training for the situation before you're in it.
We're building a new concept around what a walk together can look like.

Real Dogs Real Days! 🐾
While we're building side value with Galli this week, there's something else happening before the walk even starts — harness time. We're shaping a calm, happy response to the harness going on. Conditioned. Consented. No rushing, no wrestling, no "just hold still."
Because how the harness goes on sets the tone for everything that follows.
A dog who's calm and happy before you step out the front door is already set up for a better walk. Successful walks don't start at the end of the driveway — they start right there in your entryway.

Hey Real Dogs Real Days Fans!
Before the leash. Before the walk. Before any of that — value. 🐾
It's called SIDE VALUE. I'm using props — a target stick, paw targets, platforms — to help Galli find position next to me. We're building hand cues and rewarding that spot every time he lands in it. He's learning it's worth coming back to.
No leash. No walk. Just value.
Once he's solid, I add a step or two — only if he stays close. That's how you prevent the pull before it starts.
Old dog, starting a new habit. 👏

This week on Real Dogs Real Days we’re finding the glimmers. Here’s a simple test to try in a safe enclosed space — walk in a circle and reward your dog when they’re close to you in the side position, the side you want to build value for when walking together. Did they follow your movement? Did they choose to stay close? That’s a glimmer. That counts. We’re on our way to preventing the pull and enjoying leash walks together.
