Don’t make it about YOU, it’s for the dog!

“Let him come to you” or “not over his head” - four innocent words, and yet they can land like a warning. Say them to a new guest and watch their face change, shoulders tighten, smile goes a little fixed, voice drops half an octave into “careful now” mode. They’ve heard or perceived fear, unpredictability, or even aggression, even though we meant only to be considerate.

Dogs read us, and often misread. If a guest tenses up because they think our dog might be a problem, our dog often mirrors that tension straight back - not because anything was wrong, but because we have just told them that something might be. The instruction itself isn’t the issue; it’s the perception it can create.

However, many people don't know how to interact with dogs in a mindful, considerate way, and often cross boundaries they didn't know existed. We often still need to give these instructions, even with tolerant dogs, and not just expect our dogs to tolerate (while patting ourselves on the back for how tolerant and good-natured our dog is).

So how do we best communicate:
Make it about preference, not risk. “She likes to do her own sniff-and-decide” or “if he does want you to touch him, he will let you know and prefers to have his chin or chest stroked” reads more as personality than risk.

Giving people something to do, rather than telling them what not not to do can also help them feel less worried or self-conscious.

Deliver with a positive framing, “Give her a minute and she may want to say hello” carries the same information as “don’t rush her,” but may be perceived with less tension.

Watch your own delivery - the calmest, most useful instruction still lands as a warning if you say it with a worried face. Dogs aren't the only ones trying to read the room; people do, too.

None of this changes what we’re actually asking guests to do. It just may change what they feel while doing it - and that feeling can be the difference between a dog who adjusts and settles more easily and one who spends the whole visit unsure why everyone’s acting strange.

For dogs who are indeed a bit more fearful or distrustful of strangers, the appropriateness and selectivity of interactions will need to be carefully considered, and instructions may differ, as may the delivery.

Just a little something to brighten this week ahead…
Handsome Marley is the sweetest, most handsome, snuggle buddy that is just waiting for a home and family of his own to crawl into but beware he can’t hold his licker 😜!!
He is 3ys old, 65lb, mixed hound/bully breed who came to us from a high kill shelter in North Carolina where he was surrendered for his family having too many dogs. Marley is as sweet as they come. He loves to love everyone he meets. Marley has shown he is good with kids while at his NC foster home. He is housebroken and does well on leash. He enjoys spending time with people and is just happy to be a part of the family. Marley does great with the other dogs he has met while in our rescue and is currently fostered with another large male dog.
He is left loose in his foster home and is doing wonderful, has never had an accident in the house!
Marley is microchipped, up to date on vaccines and preventatives with an adoption fee of $375. Marley is not yet neutered but has an appointment scheduled for surgery. Meet Oscar (black) and Dobby (orange) who are 5 months old and about 4.5 pounds. Both boys are on the smaller side! They are very playful and enjoy the company of their humans. Oscar and Dobby are looking for homes where they can be a true member of the family, as they love being involved! They have a lot of love to give and are looking for individual homes or may be adopted as a pair!

They are neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and can be adopted with an adoption fee of $100 per kitten.

💙 Application Under Review💙

It’s hard to believe this handsome boy has only been in rescue for one month, as the transformation he’s already made is amazing!

When Spiffy came into our care, he was only 5 months old and weighed just 8 pounds. He arrived with painful urine scalds, significant hair loss, dehydrated, and emaciated. Over the past month, our dedicated volunteers have poured their hearts into helping Spiffy heal. With advice from our vet, Spiffy was placed on a carefully monitored refeeding plan, antibiotics, medicated baths, and lots of TLC. Spiffy is now 6 months old and is tipping the scales at around 20 pounds! Spiffy is vaccinated, microchipped, and now that he’s reached a healthy weight, his neuter appointment is scheduled in late August is paid for by the rescue.

Spiffy is everything you could want in a puppy! He is playful, affectionate, goofy, and always ready to cuddle. He rides wonderfully in the car and would happily be your little co-pilot. He’s making great progress with potty training and crate training-especially since just one month ago, he had never known consistency, routine, nor having his basic needs met.

Like any puppy, he’s still learning. Slippers and hands look like chew toys, potty accidents happen, and he may whine for a couple of minutes when settling into his crate. These are all normal puppy behaviors, and with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, he’s already proving just how eager he is to learn.

We’re looking for a family who understands that rescuing a puppy means embracing both the work and the reward! Someone who will continue building his confidence, celebrates his new learning, and loves him for the amazingly sweet boy he is.

Mr. Spiffy has overcome more in his first six months than any puppy ever should, and it’s time for him to find the home he deserves! He is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, on monthly preventatives, dewormed and will be neutered/paid for my the rescue late August, with an adoption fee of $450. Roxy, fostered in MD, is a sweet, 2yr old, 35lb shepherd mix who loves everyone she meets. She’s very friendly with all people and dogs, soaks up affection, and has gentle, soft-mannered, calm energy.
A note from her foster family: “Roxy’s tail never stops wagging; she is pure joy. She dances when she sees the leash, as her favorite thing to do is go for a walk where she can explore. She’s an angel in the house; fully housetrained and settles anywhere. We have not needed a crate for her; she is perfect in the house and has been left for 6 hours with free rein and no issues. She’s extremely food motivated, loves her Kong treats, will come to her name while in a fenced area, and is great in the car. She’s medium energy, loves to run and play and will need a fenced yard. Roxy would do well as either an only pet or with other dogs. She is a wonderful family pet and would do well with kids.”

A WORD ABOUT WAGS

A wagging tail doesn’t necessarily mean a dog is happy.

The tail is part of a dog’s communication system and the position, height, speed, direction and movement of the wag can all provide information about how a dog might be feeling.

The tail should never be read in isolation. Just like any other type of body language, we need to look at the whole dog, the context, situation and what is happening at the time.

Body language always needs to be seen as a video, not a still photograph.

A loose, sweeping wag accompanied by a soft, relaxed body may look very different from a fast, high wag on a dog whose is stiff, still or tense. Both dogs are wagging their tails — but they may be experiencing very different emotions.

It’s also important to consider the individual dog. Breed, anatomy and natural tail carriage can dramatically change what a tail looks like.

A tail carried naturally high in one dog may be unusual for another. Curled tails, very short tails and heavy coated tails can also make subtle changes more difficult to see.

This is why one of the most useful things we can learn is what is normal for our individual dog.

Notice where the tail sits when they are relaxed. Notice what happens to it when they see or experience something they love. When they notice another dog. When they hear something outside. When they are interested in something. When they are uncertain, excited, frustrated or stressed.

Changes from that individual “normal” can provide important information.

Next time you see a wagging tail, don’t automatically assume the dog is happy, but notice what the rest of the dog is saying.
