Three-year-old female Golden Retriever mix looking for a loving, experienced home as the only pet. Izzy has lived her entire life in a family home with adults and children (ages 3, 6, and 10) and is affectionate, social, and people-oriented. She enjoys being part of the household and has not shown aggression toward people.

Izzy is dog-friendly and generally dog-neutral on leash walks and in public settings. Her behavioral challenges are specifically related to resource guarding around food and other high-value items with animals in the home. Following a recent incident, her family feels she would be safest and most successful in an only-pet environment where these situations can be avoided and carefully managed.

She has done well with the children in her current home, though—as with any dog—respectful interactions and supervision are always important.

Her ideal home would include:
Being the only pet
An experienced or dog-savvy owner
Consistent structure and routines
Careful feeding management
A calm, stable environment

Current location: Carbondale PA but transport can be arranged within reasonable distance.

Looking for a best friend who’s equal parts hiking partner, cuddle expert, and full-time entertainment committee? Meet Tanner, a 3-year-old, 87-pound bundle of love who is absolutely adorable!

Tanner’s biggest passion in life? BALL. He will happily play fetch all day and may politely (or loudly) remind you if you stop too soon.

This handsome guy loves adventures, walks well on a leash, and is always ready to head out for hike or walk through the neighborhood with his people. He also enjoys playing with other dogs.

He wants to be where you are, whether that’s curled up beside you, following you from room to room, or somehow attempting to fit his 87-pound self into your lap.

Tanner is incredibly loving, affectionate, and full of personality. Like many smart labs, he’s also discovered countertops exist and occasionally tests whether snacks have been left unattended. He’s currently working on his “counter surfing retirement plan” and continues learning every day.

Tanner continues to progress with potty training, is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, is on flea/tick/heartworm prevention and has a neuter appointment scheduled for July 2nd which is paid for by the rescue. Tanner is currently being fostered in Salisbury, MD and his adoption fee is $375.

Furthermore, after repeated episodes, a dog's arousal levels rises faster, recovery takes long, dogs anticipate conflict soon, and triggers generalize. Eventually, the mere prediction of excitement itself can trigger tension itself!

Meet Marshall! Marshall is a 35lb, 2yr old, Terrier/Cattle Dog? Mix. He has not been DNA tested. This cutie arrived from New Mexico a few weeks ago and has been settling into his MD foster home from his long journey. He has been fostered in NM with his 3 siblings who were saved from one of the highest intake shelters in the country. Two of them were transferred to our rescue; his brother has already been adopted up here and Marshall would love to find his family now. He definitely thrives having other dogs around that are confident and well rounded. Marshall did well with the young child in his NM foster home and has played no mind to the cats or other critters in his MD foster home. He does take time to warm up to new people and new situations where he gets shy and will need a patient home to work on continuing to build his confidence. Marshall is crate trained and house broken. He walks well on leash and already knows some commands. He is very smart and loves to please! Continuing this training would help him with his ability to bond with his new owner(s) and gain confidence. Marshall is going to make some family a super special boy!! Marshall is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and preventatives with an adoption fee of $375. ~AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION~
This handsome fella is 3yr old, 65lb, mixed hound/bully breed named Marley. Marley came to us from a high kill shelter in North Carolina where he was surrendered for his family having too many dogs. Marley is as sweet as they come. He loves to love everyone he meets. Marley has shown he is good with kids while at his NC foster home. He tolerates his crate and will probably find it more enjoyable once he can expend his energy after his heartworm treatment is complete. He is housebroken and does well on leash. He enjoys spending time with people and is just happy to be a part of the family.
As well as arriving to the shelter a bit under weight Marley was found to be heartworm positive and is undergoing treatment in our rescue. Marley receives his second round of injections the week of April 20th. His heartworm treatment is paid for by us (the rescue) and upon completion he will be heartworm free and needs to remain on monthly heartworm preventative (as all dogs should) for the remainder of his life to prevent this from happening again.
Marley is microchipped, up to date on vaccines and preventatives with an adoption fee of $375. Marley is not yet neutered but an appointment will be made via the rescue after his heartworm treatment is completed. Manage to prevent or improve ☺️

ARE YOU MANAGING?

Are we managing our dog’s environment to prevent or improve unwanted behaviour?

As people, we tend to prefer and look for more complicated solutions to problems. This tendency is termed “complexity bias” - the tendency to prefer complicated explanations and solutions instead of looking for the simpler ones.

Surely a complicated, time consuming, detailed solution has to be more effective, superior, impressive, or correct?

Complexity bias is so relevant when it comes to changing a dog’s unwanted behaviour.

We often get so stuck on trying to modify behaviour through counter conditioning, desensitization or detailed training plans when sometimes the simplest solution to the problem lies in simply managing the environment.

Dogs will do what dogs do – when an opportunity arises to help themselves to food left on a table, to bark at the gate at anyone passing by, to drink from the big water bowl we call a toilet, to go running off with irresistibly smelly socks, to rummaging through bins and eating anything that may or may not be edible, to running out an opened door in search of adventure - the list is long - dogs will be dogs.

Parents of little children use management all the time without giving it much thought. Baby locks on cupboards, covers on electrical sockets, valuable or dangerous items put far out of reach, fences and locks around pools, etc.

We wouldn’t just train a toddler not to stick their fingers in an electrical socket, not to open cupboards, not to touch a hot plate – it’s far safer, simpler and logical to first manage the environment, to prevent potential incidents.

The same principle should apply to managing a dog’s environment to prevent unwanted behaviour.

The more a behaviour is practiced the more difficult it is to prevent. The more a behaviour is rehearsed the better dogs become at it.

Preventing the behaviour from happening in the first place by using management is the logical, simple and effective way to address it.

Be a good manager – it’s far less stressful, for both us and our dogs.
