Why does fiber matter in pet food?

Fiber plays a vital role in pet nutrition for both dogs and cats. There's a wide range of benefits to it, and the type and amount of fiber included can impact a pet's digestive health and overall well-being.

So what is fiber?

It refers to plant-based carbohydrates that are not fully digested by enzymes in the small intestine. They travel through the large intestine where they influence digestion and interact with the gut microbiome. A healthy gut microbiome produces metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids, that support gut integrity.

There are two main types:

1. Soluble Fiber
• This dissolves in water and can be fermented by gut bacteria. Examples are pumpkin, apples and chicory root.
