We are now offering prophylactic gastropexy surgery for dogs

Question:
What is gastropexy? A gastropexy is a surgery that is used to prevent GDV or commonly referred as "Bloat* or "Stomach twisting"

What is GDV? GDV stands for gastric dilatation and volvulus, which means that the stomach is enlarged and twists on itself

How a serious is GDV? GDV is fatal without surgical intervention

How does gastropexy prevent GDV? The surgery involves anchoring a portion of the stomach to the body wall. As a result, the stomach can expand, but it can no longer flip or twist, which is the dangerous part of GDV

What breeds are most commonly affected: Generally any deep chested dogs, particularly Great Danes, German Shepherds, Irish Setters, Irish Wolfhounds, Weimaraners, and Standard Poodles. Any dogs whose relatives have a history of GDV. As well as any working dogs including Police dogs and trained service dogs

We wanted to post a happy success story. Miss Stella was adopted from Genesee County Animal Control. She had severe lower lid entropion (where the eyelid rolls inward and rubs on the eye surface) and cherry eye. We performed lower lid entropion surgery as well as Morgan pocket technique to repair her cherry eye. She is an absolutely wonderful dog and we were so happy to help her on her journey of healing and living her best life pain-free.

We are looking for a wonderful home for Mr. Carl for the holidays. He is sure to make your home "Merry and Bright." Carl is a real "ham" and you can see he has some good porkchop cheeks. He has had his "cranberries" removed and ready to make some biscuits. So come sn**ch up this pumpkin pie--he's a real marshmallow

Exciting news! Dr. DeAndrea will be joining the practice on a part time basis beginning the first of the year. Her Bio is below. WELCOME Dr. DeAndrea!

Originally from New Jersey, Dr. DeAndrea graduated from St. George’s University, Grenada, in 2019. As a veterinarian, she has an interest in soft tissue surgery and cardiology, and is especially partial to small, spicy dogs. She’s the proud owner of two Pomeranians, a chihuahua, and one cat, and in her free time, she loves crocheting, hiking, kayaking, and reading true crime.

Dr. Florida considers her clients and patients like they are family and therefore would like to share some exciting news and upcoming changes.

If you have brought your pet in recently, you may be already aware, but Dr. Florida is expecting her first baby July 1st. As a result, she will be going on maternity leave at the end of June. While there are a lot of unknowns, she plans on seeing patients and performing surgeries until she goes on maternity leave. While Dr. Florida is on maternity leave, she has made every effort to secure relief veterinarians to cover the time that she is absent. The relief veterinarians will be seeing appointments, but they will not be performing surgeries. Dr. Florida is scheduled to return at the beginning of September. We ask that you please be patient as unforeseen circumstances may occur, resulting in us closing early or having to close due to staffing shortages. We may have to refer you to other local hospitals and/or emergencies. This is something that Dr. Florida does not take lightly, because the patients and clients mean everything to her.

As a result of Dr. Florida’s impending absence, some changes will need to occur. Effective beginning Saturday, May 18th, the hospital will be closed on Saturdays. There will be no boarding drop offs on Saturdays. Prearranged prepaid pick up for boarding pets will be available on Saturdays. These policies may be subject to change.

We appreciate your understanding and support during this time as we navigate these changes. Dr. Florida will be giving an update when baby Imogen is born.
