Almost extinct by the early 1900s due to unregulated tree cutting the wood duck couldn't find suitable nesting sights to hatch their eggs. Thanks to hunters and conservationists in the US thousands of these wood duck boxes were made to help this bird nest and hatch ducklings while forests regrew over the decades. Now this species is one of the most abundant ducks along the east coast. A true success story of saving a species from extinction.
