Is your dog at risk for dental disease? Over 70% of dogs show signs of dental disease by age 3. We’re breaking down everything you need to know to become your pup’s best defense against dental disease!
🦠 What Is Periodontal Disease? It’s a progressive infection that damages the tissues supporting your dog’s teeth.
👀 Spot the Signs: Watch for bad breath, bleeding gums, difficulty eating, facial swelling, drooling, nasal discharge, pawing at the mouth, or behavior changes.
⚠️ Systemic Damage: Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and harm the heart, liver, and kidneys.
🪥 Regular Brushing: Brush 3–5 times a week with a VOHC-approved toothpaste. It’s one of the best preventatives!
👉 Toothbrush Alternatives: If your dog hates brushing, try finger brushes, dental wipes, or work with a qualified trainer on cooperative care exercises.
💧 Additives: Water additives and food toppers can help reduce bacteria- just look for that VOHC seal!
🧼 Squeaky Clean: Clean bowls regularly! Stainless steel or ceramic > plastic. Multiple dogs? Clean even more often.
🦴 Dental Chews: Look for chews that your dog actually has to work at- if they can devour it in 30 seconds, that’s probably not doing a lot for their teeth. You can check for that VOHC seal!
