Kayla has been balancing both reception AND technician duties, always putting her best foot forward and going above and beyond for our patients and their families. 💕 From helping things to run smoothly up front to providing hands-on care in the treatment area, she truly is a gift!

And we can’t forget her extra-special dedication to Baby Meow this last month, as she cared for and nursed him daily, every step in between🐱🍼 Her compassion, patience, and willingness to jump in wherever she’s needed make her such an incredible asset to our team.

Here at VCMC we take pre-medicating (and cleaning) very seriously 😂

Pre-medicating our pets helps to keep stress levels low for both you and your babies. Our feline friends are generally solitary creatures, so when we scoop them up and kidnap them for a veterinary visit, they are often much more stressed than meets the eye!

Signs of stress:
- Whale Eyes
- Ears Back
- Loud Purring
- Hypersalivation
- Vocalization
- Hiding

Even though we love a spicy kitten purrito, pre gabapentin can help to keep pheromones under wraps and provide a safe environment for everyone involved 🐱

🐟 Is your pet getting the right Omega-3s? 🐶🐱

Not all Omega-3 fatty acids are created equal! While many pet foods contain ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) from plant sources like flaxseed, dogs convert only a small amount of ALA into the beneficial Omega-3s their bodies actually need—and cats have an even more limited ability to make this conversion.

The Omega-3s that provide the greatest health benefits are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which come from marine sources like fish oil. These are the forms that have been clinically shown to support:

🌽 Corn on the cob is a summer favorite for us—but it can be life-threatening for dogs.

While plain corn kernels aren’t usually the problem, corn cobs are extremely dangerous. Dogs often swallow large pieces (or even whole cobs), which cannot be digested and can become lodged in the stomach or intestines.

A corn cob obstruction can lead to:
🚨 Vomiting
🚨 Loss of appetite
🚨 Abdominal pain
🚨 Lethargy
🚨 Life-threatening intestinal blockage

In many cases, emergency surgery is needed to remove the obstruction. Without prompt treatment, a blockage can cut off blood supply to the intestines, causing tissue death, severe infection, and even become fatal.

🌽 This summer, be sure to keep corn cobs out of reach, secure your trash, and remind guests not to feed table scraps to your pets.

If your dog has swallowed a corn cob—or you think they may have—contact your veterinarian or the nearest emergency veterinary hospital immediately. Early treatment can make all the difference.

🌫️ Poor Air Quality Affects Pets Too 🐾

With smoke from the wildfires impacting air quality in our area, it’s important to remember that our pets can be affected just like we are.

🐶🐱 To help keep your companions safe:
• Limit long walks, hikes, and strenuous outdoor play.
• Keep windows and doors closed when possible.
• Make sure fresh water is always available.
• Wipe paws after going outside if there is ash or debris.
• Keep a close eye on pets with heart or lung conditions, seniors, and very young animals, as they are especially vulnerable.

🚨 Contact your veterinarian if your pet develops:
• Coughing
• Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
• Excessive eye irritation
• Lethargy or weakness
• Loss of appetite

A little extra caution during periods of poor air quality can go a long way in keeping your furry family members healthy and comfortable. ❤️🐾

🚨 Naughty Pet of the Month: Ollie 🚨

Ollie took “treat yourself” a little too seriously this month after helping himself to some chocolate chip cookies 🍪😅 Unfortunately, his snack choice earned him an immediate trip to see us for some not-so-fun intervention. Safe to say Ollie has officially lost unsupervised kitchen privileges… but he’s still very cute, so we’ll let it slide this time 🐾💙

And seriously… How can you stay mad at this guy?! 🫶
