Microchips are amazing!

One of wonderful habitat volunteers went to help out a friendly cat living in a storm drain. The kitty was scanned for a chip, and his owners were located. He had been lost since February! He was very happy to be back with his family.

All cats and dogs adopted through AZCare are microchipped. Are your pets? We highly reccomend it!

These sweet kittens were left in a box near a desert hiking trail. They were found by compassionate people who got them to a vet and soon found a home for one. The other three have been brought to full health by an amazing foster family. They are now fixed, vaccinated, dewormed, felv/fiv tested negative, and microchipped. Their sad chapter of abandonment and neglect is over, and they're friendly, playful, adventerous, and ready for a bright new beginning!

Did you know that 80% of orange cats are male?

This isn't an April Fool's joke. It's true!

The gene for orange fur is carried on the X chromosome. Since males are XY, they only need to inheret the orange gene on the one X. In order for a female, XX, to be orange, she would need to inheret the orange gene on both Xs, making it statistically less likely. This only affects cats that are completely orange. If a cat has any amount of white, it doesn't apply.

Orange mama Katja is here showing off her three gorgeous ginger boys. They've got some growing to do before being ready for adoption sometime in May.

Meet Mizuki!

This incredibly sweet girl was found in a storm drain with two very young kittens. She was wearing a collar, so in an effort to find where she belonged, rescuers put an airtag on her collar and found her owners. They were unaware that she had kittens and were overwhelmed as they had several unfixed cats. The great people who got Mizuki and her kittens out of the storm drain asked AZCare to take them in. We are happy to report that this wonderfully sweet cat was able to raise her kittens in a safe, comfortable foster home. She has been fixed, vaccinated, dewormed, felv/fiv tested neg, and is ready to find her forever home. You can see her at the Petsmart habitat now, and her kittens come available for adoption tonight (Mar 28).

It's kitten season, and rescues are being flooded with requests to take newborn kittens.

With so few active bottle feeders and so many newborn kittens, rescues are quickly overwhelmed. Yet, in the majority of cases, these kittens have not been abandoned. M**s cat is nearby. Well-meaning people endanger kittens by taking them from their best chance at survival- their mama cat.
If you find a hidden batch of babies and you don't see the mom, don't panic! Sprinkle flour around them, leave the area for a few hours, and then check the flour for footprints. Mama cats frequently leave their kittens to hunt or for a potty break. They have very strong maternal instincts and experience enormous stress if they can't find their babies.

Here is a handy guide on when to intervene.

Meet Leonardo and Raphael!

These two sweet boys do everything together! They had a rough start and really rely on each other. They are shy with new people initially, but once they feel secure, they are very affectionate. They are gentle cuddle kitties.

These two would really like a home where they can stay together. We do offer a discount for bonded pairs!

Last of her litter!

Opeli is a sweet, social gal. She would very much like to be in a home with another kitten or an older cat that wouldn't mind being her best friend. She does shy away from new people on first meeting, but is all purrs when you pet her. She's a sucker for treats!

Opeli is fixed, vaccinated, felv/fiv tested neg, dewormed, and microchipped.

You can fill out a request to meet her on our website at azcarerescue.org

These six month old kittens and these itty bitty kittens have a lot in common. All sweet, all fluffy, all adorable- and they all have the same mama!

Cats can have multiple litters in a year. This particular mama had a litter of seven in August followed by a litter of four earlier this month. She is now with AZCare and will be spayed along with her kittens when they are old enough.

Please spay and neuter!
These particular kitties were fortunate enough to land with a family that cared for them until they had maxed out their resources in trying to place them all in homes, at which point they were diligent in finding a rescue. Not all are so lucky. Spay and neuter saves lives!

The six month old kittens are being spayed today and will be adoptable soon.

Look at this glow up!

Some cat breeds, like Siamese, can change color fairly dramatically as they mature. This process is called acromelanism. The gene responsible for the shift is heat sensitive. Cooler parts of the body, like the ears and tail, tend to deepen more. Cats in cooler climates can be darker than they would be where it's warm!

Jibby is a great example. His creamy coat matured to a gorgeous deep brown. A DNA test done by his adopter revealed that he has Maine C**n, Himalayan, and Norwegian Forest Cat in the blend. Himalayans are a breed where Acromelanism occurs. Jibby was adopted from us in 2021 before moving to cooler climes. We're thrilled to see him doing so well!

Who's that at the habitat?

It's Tazz!

If you've been to the Queen Creek Petsmart habitat lately, you've likely heard this social boy calling for friends! Tazz loves to be with people. He's affectionate, playful, and is a total lap kitty.

Tazz is about 10 months old. He's fixed, felv/fiv tested negative, dewormed, vaccinated, and microchipped.

Foster Fail (noun)

1. An animal that is meant to be in the care of a foster family temporarily but stays permanently. (He just won't leave, and you don't want him to)

2. A failure to adopt out an animal you promised your spouse/roommate/parents would not stay long. (Liar, liar, pants on fire)

Typically occurs when the person who is supposed to say 'no' has no restraint, either.

Thank you, PetSmart , for the great toys!

Our partnership with Petsmart is amazing in so many ways. The habitat we are allowed to utilize in their store gives our deserving kitties exposure to potential adopters, they provide a coupon booklet to help our new pet parents start out right, and we recently received a donation of toys.

Big thank you from Soren, Amaya, and their foster uncle, Marty!

Where do our kittens and cats come to rescue from?

Right now we have:

*Three found in a cardboard box by a hiking trail

*Two left in a carrier outside a clinic

*One left in a bathroom at a park

*One left in a hotel room, severely malnourished

And many more that came through networking with other animal rescuers, like Ghost (pictured- available soon).

These stories of neglect and abandonment might make us think people are so cruel, but we like to focus on the caring hiker who collected the abandoned cats and paid to have the sickest see the vet. The hotel employee who found and nourished the starving kitten. All of these stories have hope due to good people!

We can't help these kitties without our community. Thank you for liking, commenting, sharing, donating, and caring!
