Weâve received updates on Gambit today that have been scary and complicated. We started out early eagerly waiting to hear if his GI motility was improving, which it hadnât much, still remains sluggish, but we were also notified of a problem that developed overnight with his sodium levelsâŚ..in receiving the fluids he needed, they also drove his levels up and they were at a very high level, which can lead to cerebral edemaâ-brain swelling.
His clinicians explained that removing him completely from fluids wasnât an option because it would cause a sodium concentration, so they were switching him to lower sodium fluids in hopes his levels would begin trending down and there wasnât already brain damage.
We just spoke to his clinician shortly ago and she informed us that he seems a little more alert tonight and his vitals are stable. His sodium is still high but has been trending down and they are to be rechecking his levels every 2-3 hours overnight to ensure they remain decreasing. Tomorrow, as long as his numbers all look good, they plan to add back a GI motility drug and reassess his GI tract.
Every pig is special and when you get to know them youâll learn every pig has a unique personality. And once youâve truly loved a pig, youâll never be the same. Gambit is one very special pig, heâs like a little Pooh bear, with his old man smile. He is quiet, spends most of his day napping beside his best friend, Waldo.
At 15, Gambit is one of our oldest residents, he is sweet and personable. Like all the pigs that make their way to OA, we promise to give them not just what they need to survive, but what they need to thrive. Gambit needs us to now more than ever. His survival depends on it. Without the specialized veterinary care he is receiving now, he would not survive. We donât like asking for donations, but we have to in order to provide Gambit with veterinary care that he needs. We have had to put down 2 deposits, $500 upon hospitalization and an additional $2000 yesterday. Weâve raised just over $500 in the last 2 days. We had multiple intake requests today but we are not able to help because we have to ensure we have the funds needed to care for the animals already in our care. Please consider making a donation towards Gambitâs medical care.
