🚨 SAVE THIS: When temps crash from the 60s to the 20s 🚨
Fast weather changes stress cattle more than steady cold.
Watch these 5 things first:
❄️ Feed
Cold cattle need more calories. If they don’t eat, they lose condition fast.
➡️ Make sure feed is available and they’re coming to the bunk.
💨 Lungs
Cold wind + moisture hits the lungs hard.
➡️ Watch for coughing, runny noses, or labored breathing.
🧊 Teats & Extremities
Sudden cold raises frostbite risk.
➡️ Wind protection matters more than temperature alone.
🐄 Body Condition
Thin and late-gestation cows struggle first.
➡️ Keep an eye on older and thinner cows.
🚰 Water
Frozen or low water = less eating.
➡️ Check tanks daily during cold snaps.

Rapid cold drops don’t always cause problems right away — they set them up. Small adjustments early can prevent bigger issues later.

Did you know one of the biggest winter dangers for pets is something they might want to taste?

Ethylene glycol antifreeze has a naturally sweet flavor, which makes even tiny spills extremely dangerous for dogs and cats. Just a teaspoon can be life threatening, especially for small pets.

As temperatures drop, antifreeze leaks become more common. Puddles in garages, driveways, or sidewalks can catch a pet’s attention quickly.

Early signs of ingestion include stumbling or appearing drunk, vomiting, increased thirst and urination, or unusual quietness. Within 24 to 72 hours, kidney damage can occur without urgent treatment.

Winter safety tip: Check your garage and driveway often, wipe up spills immediately, store antifreeze securely, and never let pets drink from outdoor puddles. Quick action saves lives. ❄️🐾

🎁 Looking for a gift that truly matters?

Heartworm disease is preventable — and giving heartworm prevention is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give a pet you love. ❤️

The Cold Weather has arrived, are you and your herd prepared for the long winter ahead?

How do we reduce stress of the herd in the cold?
• Provide windbreaks- Even trees or stacked bales can serve as a place to get out of the wind.
• Provide cover where possible- Cattles’ ability to stay warm decreases when they are wet.
• Provide adequate access to unfrozen water- Dehydrated animals have harder times regulating temperatures.
• Feed extra long-stem forage- Cattle produce more heat when digesting good quality hay.
• Provide bedding- If the ground is wet and muddy, bedding such as corn stalks or straw can help reduce the risk of frostbite and heat loss.
