This standard poodle sustained a spontaneous dislocation/fracture of the central bone. Due to the chronic nature of the injury, a partial arthrosis was performed. An Arthrex T-plate was used to stabilize the tarsus with a positional screw, extending through the plate, central tarsal bone and fourth tarsal bone. We wish George a speedy recovery!

Today is a very sad day for us at the Animal Surgical Center of Michigan as our four interns will be leaving us. These individuals are top notch, super stars. They will be heading off to advance their careers. We applaud them for their stellar performance, cohesive interactions with each other and our staff, and for the research projects that they completed during the internship. They will be greatly missed!!!

A fantastic approach with maximal exposure of the medial humerus is shown here. A nerve, artery, and vein that penetrates into the cranial aspect of the medial head of the triceps muscle is transected, and the entire brachial neurovascular bundle is retracted cranially. This exposes, the entire medial humerus and simplifies procedures, such as fracture repair or total elbow replacement. This procedure has been described by Dr. Loic DeJardin. Give it a try the next time you need to approach the bone.

Distal humeral condylar fractures can be challenging to repair due to the anatomical arrangement of the condyles, supratrochlear foramen, anconeal process, and joint surfaces. Anatomical plates, such as the distal humeral plate made by Arthrex, have dramatically simplified the repair of such fractures. The trajectory of the locking transcondylar screw is perfect. The plate also accommodates the medial epicondyle with an oval opening in its distal aspect. The most caudodistal screw is angled cranially to purchase the thicker condylar region, yet misses the joint surface. We wish Annie, who had her distal humerus repaired using the Arthex plate a speedy recovery.

Odie presented for correction of grade 4 lateral patellar luxation and distal femoral valgus. The preoperative femoral neck anteversion was excessive resulting in hip subluxation. The bony deformity was completed with a medial closing wedge osteotomy and femoral torsional derotation to correct excessive anteversion to correct hip subluxation. A distal femoral osteotomy Arthrex plate and locking screws were used to stabilize the osteotomy. Trochleoplasty, lateral desmotomy, medial capsulorrhaphy and medial tibial crest transposition were performed to complete the surgery. The first video is prior to surgery and the second video is 2 weeks postop. We wish Odie a speedy recovery!

Aloe, a one-year-old mixed breed dog, presented for repair of multiple fractures and bilateral sacroiliac luxation. With the use of intraoperative fluoroscopy, the sacroiliac luxations were reduced and repaired using lag screws. An open muscle separation caudal approach (see previous post regarding approach to acetabulum without trochanteric osteotomy) was used to expose the acetabular fracture and was repaired with a locking acetabular plate/locking screws. The femur bone was repaired using an interlocking nail. A few PDS sutures were used to bring large fragments back into approximation. We wish Aloe a speedy recovery.

Farley, a 9 year old, 37 lb, mixed-breed dog, sustained a traumatic shoulder luxation. After 3 months of nonweight-bearing lameness, the dog presented to us for treatment. Imaging showed a lateral shoulder luxation and a ridge worn on the medial aspect of the humeral head. Using a craniolateral approach, via muscle separation, Arthrex corkscrew bone anchors were placed in the lateral glenoid and fastened to a bone screw in the proximal humerus and to the greater tubercle to a washer via a bone tunnel and flat washer. Excellent stability of the shoulder was achieved. A shoulder stabilization harness from dogleggs.com was used for 2 months to protect the shoulder repair during the healing process. At the recheck completed at 3 months postop, Haley was using the limb very well and was no longer painful. We wish Farley continued success following shoulder reconstruction.

Ivy, a 3.5 month old, German Short-haired Pointer was brutally beaten by her owner with a bar and sustained fractures to her pelvis, femoral head and right zygomatic arch. The right ilial fracture was repaired with a plate and screws and the left capital physeal femoral fracture was repaired with two pins and the aid of intraoperative fluoroscopy. The next day, after surgery, she was already walking. We wish Ivy a speedy and full recovery. Ivy has a new home with loving owners and her former owner is in jail. Donations for Ivy's medical/surgical expenses can be sent to Macomb County Animal Control 21417 Dunham Rd, Clinton Twp, MI 48036.
