Anatomia del cavallo, a 1500s veterinary text by Carlo Ruini, was the first book to focus exclusively on the anatomical structure of an animal (rather than a human). Pictured here is a digitized copy of one of the 64 woodcut illustrations in the text, depicting a horse's abdominal cavity opened to reveal the digestive system.

We are highlighting this illustration on World Digestive Health Day, an observance established by the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) to raise awareness of gastrointestinal diseases and disorders.
