When 10-year-old João Gabriel spotted a tiny stray puppy alone in the middle of the road, he couldn't just walk past.

The boy was walking home from school in Brazil when he noticed the little white puppy. He could tell the pup was alone and seemed hungry, so João decided to do something about it.

“I was upset, because he was alone and very cute, and seemed to be hungry,” João explained.

He gently picked up the puppy, placed him inside his backpack and carried him to a place he knew would have food and water.

“I took him to the pharmacy that I pass by every day,” João said.

A food and water bowl is kept outside the pharmacy for street dogs. Security camera footage captured João carefully taking the puppy out of his backpack and placing him beside the bowls before waving goodbye and continuing on his way.

Soon afterward, pharmacy workers noticed the puppy and contacted animal rescuer Josiel Pedro Barbosa, who maintains the bowls outside. Barbosa came to collect the little dog and make sure he was safe.

After Barbosa shared João's kindness on social media, the puppy quickly found a loving home.

João didn't seem interested in the attention his good deed received. What mattered to him was finding out that the puppy had been adopted.

“The other day, I passed by [the pharmacy] and I saw that he had been adopted,” João said. “I was very happy.”

The pharmacy rewarded João with a new pair of sneakers for his kindness, while Barbosa said the boy's actions gave him something even more meaningful - hope.

“It’s good to see that you are not alone, and that we have hope for a better world,” Barbosa said.

Sometimes the biggest acts of kindness come from the smallest hands. João saw a puppy who needed help—and simply stopped to help him. ❤️🐾
