We have a very sad case to share with you this morning 😭
From our kennel manager, Alex:
“Alright. So, when you’re deep in the animal welfare world, you see a lot. You hear a lot. You experience a lot. Every day. But for whatever reason, there are certain cases that get through. Certain animals that pull at something in you… And that brings me to Luna.
I received a text from our foster coordinator. It had been forwarded from one of our volunteers who frequently brings us unwanted or abandoned dogs from a local inner city area. At first glance, it was just a few photos of a fluffy Husky. Then I quickly realized it was actually a completely yellow stained, very skinny Husky with the absolute sweetest eyes. There was no information about this dog... No history. No details. Nothing. Only that it was clearly in a bad situation. Normally, there is a process for us to go through before outright taking a dog but I took one look at those pictures and said bring her here. We’re not leaving her there.
What walked through the doors a few hours later was something I was actually not expecting. The pictures didn’t even begin to do her condition justice.
When I tell you that you can feel every single ridge of her spine and physically grab onto every surface of this dog’s pelvis, I am not exaggerating. Her body is quite literally skin and bones but just masked by the Husky type thick fur. Her once beautiful coat is stained completely yellow from urine, accompanied by urine burns on her skin.
The volunteer described the situation as some sort of drug house. And well. that’s really all we know. How long has she been living like this? A month? A year? Several years? She’s certainly not a young puppy judging by the condition of her mouth. How many days has she gone without anyone caring enough to notice or properly feed her? But thank God they gave her up with a tiny Halloween sweater on???
Now, here’s what got me. Outside our kennel, we have donation bins where people drop off supplies. Sitting on top of those bins happened to be a set of dog bowls.
As we walked past, Luna immediately made her way over, jumped up onto the bins, and started sticking her face into the bowls.. Licking them. Pawing at them. Desperately searching for something to eat or drink. They were bone dry and she still did not stop.
I have to say, even after everything I’ve seen over the years, that was painful to watch. There is something particularly heartbreaking about watching an animal so desperately search for something as basic as water. Something that should have never been a question in the first place. And yet…. My god, is she the sweetest thing ever... She is completely unfazed by everything around her. She happily trotted through the entire kennel alongside me as I rummaged around gathering supplies for her. She was practically falling asleep while I bathed her in a literal sink (after she was frantically licking up the water coming out). She greeted every person she encountered with nothing but sweetness and was just as happy to see the other dogs. Not an ounce of resentment toward the world that has so clearly failed her. Just a happy, gentle dog who seems grateful for every little bit of attention she receives. I can only hope that despite her physical condition, that her owners treated her with kindness.
I am smitten with this little girl. Somebody, is going to get an absolutely incredible dog. Luna is now safe with Eleventh Hour and will be receiving the proper care she needs.

(She does seem to know her name. We would never choose something so generic for such a special dog🤪).”
