Today, we’re honoring a day that often goes unnoticed—Veterinary Appreciation Day!

In our world, it’s easy to view Dr. Andrews as a superhero—and honestly, many of us do. She’s a brilliant, resilient woman who wears many hats: business owner, solo practitioner (until just last week!), boss, wife, and mother. But beneath the strength and capability, she is, above all, human.

Veterinary medicine is a field full of light—healing, hope, and connection—but it also holds a fair share of darkness. The pressure is immense. We’re often faced with complex cases, where answers aren’t always clear, yet perfection is still expected.

What many don’t see are the long nights with colicking horses, the emergency lacerations at midnight, the early farm calls and late-night returns. Most evenings, she transitions straight from work to the sidelines of her children’s sports — only to come home late and rise early to do it all again.

Unlike the rest of us, Dr. Andrews doesn’t get a weekday off. It’s been more than two years since she’s taken a sick day. With a packed schedule and waitlists weeks long, missing a day means someone—and some horse—goes without. So she presses on, driven by her deep commitment to the horses and the people who love them.

Today, we celebrate Dr. Andrews—for her sacrifices, her strength, and her unwavering dedication to this profession and to every life she touches.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped us pull off today’s surprise, especially to the clients who played along with their “fake” appointments. Dr. Andrews is finally enjoying a day entirely to herself—and it’s so well deserved.

We’d love for you to join us in celebrating. Share your stories, your favorite memories, and photos of your horses that she’s worked on. Let’s make sure she knows just how appreciated she truly is!

Routine adjustments aren’t just for fixing problems—they’re for preventing them!

Regular bodywork helps keep your horse moving comfortably, performing at their best, and catching small issues before they become big ones ✨

Have you ever been told to not allow a hot, sweaty horse to drink cold water because it could lead to colic, founder or tie up?

This notion is actually a myth, and a dangerous one too, because it could lead to dehydration and very serious (and real) consequences. A sweaty, hardworking horse needs to be rehydrated without delay (i.e. don’t wait for the horse to cool down first).

The key, however, is to know how much water to allow at one time — because of the equine stomach’s relatively small capacity, offer small amounts of water every 20 minutes until the horse drinks his fill rather than letting the animal drink it all at once.

Remember that water is the most vital nutrient for a horse. A horse’s daily water requirements are influenced by many factors, but the average idle 1,100-pound horse in a cool environment will drink 6 to 10 gallons of water per day. That amount may easily double or triple in a hot environment! Therefore, it goes without saying that providing cool, clean water to your horses at all times is of paramount importance.

We are so thrilled to announce that Dr. Tessa Short will be joining the APHS team as an intern this week!

Tessa is originally from Clanton, Alabama and is a recent graduate of Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Her love for horses began at a young age through horse shows and barrel racing, which sparked her passion for equine medicine. Tessa has been part of the APHS family for several years, spending her undergraduate summers working and shadowing with us.

She enjoys all aspects of equine general practice, with special interests in sports medicine and rehabilitation. Before veterinary school, Tessa earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Judson College.

When she’s not working on horses, you’ll likely find her reading a good book, spending time with her husband and dog, or preparing for her next big adventure—welcoming her first child!

Did you know horses withers can also get restricted?

The withers play a huge role in your horse’s mobility, posture, and saddle fit. When restricted, it can affect everything from stride length to behavior under saddle!

Signs to watch for:
– Reluctance to move forward
– Difficulty picking up a lead
– “Cold-backed” behavior when saddled
– Atrophy or swelling near the withers
– Poor topline development
