From Dennis, to the members of the Percheron Horse Association of America

I have been around Percherons every day — and I mean every day — for the last fifty-six years. In that time, I've watched this breed go through changes that have worried me and made my heart sick. But I've also watched a handful of people refuse to let the working horse disappear, while still embracing the hitch, under saddle, carriage, even vaulting. They've seen the versatility of this breed firsthand. That's exactly why I'm proud to endorse Leonard Kremer and Molly Hahn for the Board of Directors of the Percheron Horse Association of America. I'm also asking you to write in the names and addresses of Leonard Kremer and Molly Hahn as well.

I've known Leonard for several years, and what strikes me most isn't just what he's accomplished — it's how he goes about it. He had a vision. He saw the need, and he went for it. He started from nothing, worked his way up through life, served our country, made some really good business decisions. With his own money, he brought over four young registered Percheron stallions from France in 2023 to infuse this breed here in North America with new blood and to "bring back the bone" in our beloved Percherons. Their first foal crop is on the ground this year. Stud colts will be available at weaning.

Molly is one of the sharpest, most dedicated people I know in this breed. She doesn't just talk about doing right by the Percheron — she shows up, does the work, and gets results. I trust her judgment and her follow-through, and I believe she'd bring exactly the kind of clear-eyed, straight talking, hands-on perspective this association could really use at this time. They've got registered fillies available - built to work.

Several times in the last few years I considered permanently removing myself as a member of the Association. I have been so disappointed at what I was seeing others call quality. After a conversation Wednesday night with a fellow breeder who showed in the farm classes at this year's Congress, well, I'm angry. Hitch classes are fine, but there is more to this breed than hooves-to-belly in a show ring. Both of these candidates have earned my confidence through years of proven character as well as the Percherons produced on their watch.

I hope you'll join me in casting your vote by writing in Leonard Kremer and Molly Hahn in your ballot. Hopefully it isn't too late and you've not sent yours in yet. Also, I am asking you to spread the word to other PHAoA members - ESPECIALLY the Amish members who won't know to write Leonard and Molly in. I spoke with one Amishman from Missouri a couple days ago about this, and he said "I wouldn't have voted at all, but now that I know Leonard and Marie are running, I'll vote." For people who got a paper ballot and lost it, they CAN call the Association and get an e-ballot sent to an email address. Even the Amish know someone with a cell phone and email account. These ballots must be received by September 15th.

My name is Molly Hahn, from Hay Springs, Nebraska. I am asking you to WRITE IN my name and address as your vote for me to have a seat on the Percheron Horse Association Board of Directors.

With my husband, John, a third-generation Percheron breeder, I've handled the breeding, marketing, and management details for the Hahn Family Ranch for twenty years. We currently own twelve registered broodmares. Canadian bred Marcoux Farms Benny is our Herd Sire. Our Percherons are bred to work, broke to work, and consistently put to work; we've recently retired our logging operation, but at full steam we worked up to nine teams in the woods at a time. We also run 1,000+/- head of black Angus yearlings on 4,000 acres here on our Ranch.

In the past 40 years old-timers passed away and old bloodlines faded out while the hitchy, leggy type became desirable. The pendulum is swinging back and the demand for registered farm ready Percherons is returning. But still the Association concentrates primarily on the hitch horses, and the rest of the breed is an afterthought - relegated to the back of a parking lot at a World Congress.

There are those of us who have stayed true to the breed and understand what "breeding to better the breed" really means — putting sound, sane, working animals into the world, and investing our time, energy, and resources to do it. The old style deserves its share of the spotlight.

PHAoA Members: Write in LEONARD KREMER on your Board of Directors Voting Ballot, please! Here are Leonard's own words:

I'm Leonard Kremer from Tyronza, Arkansas, and I would be grateful for your vote to be a member of the Board of Directors for the Percheron Horse Association of America.

I've spent my life around draft horses and agriculture, helping found the auction that would become the Southern Indiana Draft Horse Sale in Montgomery Co., Indiana. For the past several years, Marie Brown and I have helped folks all over the country locate and buy the old style, farm type of registered Percheron. I saw how difficult this was getting, so in 2023 I took two trips to France to bring back four young stallions to infuse new blood into the American working Percheron. These stallions are the first French breeding stock to be imported to the states in 40 years. I currently own five mares and two stallions, including NESQUIK DES HAIES (92310319) from France, and am proud of the first 2026 foal crop from these French stallions.

There's nothing wrong with an 18 or 19-hand show horse — the showring has its place. But I believe we need a better understanding and promotion of what this breed can do outside the showring - in the fields and in other activities, whether as a hobby or a vocation. We need to promote the whole of the breed, not just the showring Percheron.

Abby and Ricky just left our place after trimming Dandy, Lucy, Collette, Debutante, and Captain.

Always excellent service and she travels WITH her own stocks along the I-35 corridor and into Wisconsin.

It is often a challenge to find a trimmer who will work with drafts, but Abby loves the opportunity to work with drafts as well as all other breeds and types. Call or text to get on her rotation schedule.
