A day at the lake is one of summer's greatest joys—and for many dogs, there's nothing better than splashing, swimming, and playing fetch from the shoreline. A few simple precautions can help keep your pup safe while they enjoy the water.

Before heading out:

* Bring plenty of fresh drinking water so your dog isn't tempted to drink lake water.
* Consider a canine life jacket, especially for puppies, senior dogs, smaller breeds, or dogs swimming from a boat or paddleboard.
* Keep swimming sessions short and encourage breaks in the shade to prevent overheating.
* Rinse your dog with clean water after swimming to remove bacteria, algae, and debris from their coat.
* Dry their ears thoroughly, especially if they're prone to ear infections.

Most importantly, always check the water before letting your dog swim. Avoid areas with blue-green algae, which may look like pea soup, spilled green paint, or thick surface scum. Even small amounts can be extremely dangerous to dogs.

A little preparation goes a long way toward making every lake day a safe one.

Need a life jacket, travel water bowl, floating toy, or cooling gear? Stop by Green Mountain Pet & Tack—we'd love to help get your adventure-ready pup outfitted for the season!

Blue-Green Algae: What Every Pet Owner Should Know

A day at the lake can be one of summer's greatest joys—but it's important to know the signs of blue-green algae, which can be toxic to dogs.

Even water that looks calm or inviting can pose a risk.

Before your pup takes a swim, look for:
• Water that appears bright green, blue-green, or looks like spilled paint
• Thick scum or mats floating on the surface
• Algae collecting along the shoreline
• Stagnant or slow-moving water
Review the online tracker before visiting your favorite swimming spot: https://www.healthvermont.gov/environment/tracking/cyanobacteria-blue-green-algae-tracker

A few simple ways to stay safe:
✓ Bring fresh drinking water so your dog isn't tempted to drink from the lake.
✓ When in doubt, skip the swim.
✓ Rinse your dog after any swim to remove bacteria or algae from their coat.
✓ If your dog has been exposed and starts vomiting, drooling, acting weak, or having trouble walking, contact your veterinarian immediately.

We love exploring Vermont with our dogs, and a little awareness goes a long way toward keeping every adventure a safe one.

Have a favorite dog-friendly swimming spot? Share it in the comments—we're always looking for safe places to explore!

And don’t forget: fireworks and pets are rarely a good mix.
Even the most easygoing dogs can become anxious or panic during fireworks displays. If your pet struggles with loud noises:
• Keep them safely indoors in a secure, familiar space
• Make sure ID tags and microchip info are current
• Consider calming aids if appropriate for your pet
• Turn on music, TV, or white noise to help mask sounds
• Plan ahead if you’ll be away from home during fireworks

Stop in before the holiday week for travel essentials, calming support, and summer safety must-haves.
