Petunia came into the shelter back in January as a stray and was never reclaimed. While we were getting her vetting completed we made the unfortunate discovery that Petunia was positive for heartworm. In May she embarked on the long and costly road of treatment which included a month long dosing of antibiotics along with steroids' and monthly heartworm preventative. After successfully completing those medications she underwent the heartworm injections to fully kill the adult worms living in her heart. The injections are given at 60 days then repeated at day 90 and 91. Petunia successfully finished up her injections last week and is now currently working on completing her last dosing of steroids'. She will need one final test to make sure all the pesky heartworms are gone but until that time comes we are looking for a home for our sweet Petunia.
In her time at the shelter she hasn't found a human she doesn't love. Petunia has seen numerous dogs come and go as well as she came in with another dog but she will need a large submissive dog to room with. She does have a prey drive so small dogs and cats can get her worked up. She is totally house trained and often spent time in a separate exam room (in our temp building) recovering from her injections and always kept it tidy and loved to lounge in the chair provided for her (so no promises of keeping her off the furniture🙃).
Petunia is a large gal, weighing in at about 70lbs and currently on a strict weight loss diet to reduce her lady lumps. She is a puller on leashes so will need a strong hand or a pinch type collar to help with that. Her one main vice is going after moving vehicles, the lawn mower, and potentially bicycles. In general Petunia is a genuine house hippo but moving transport vehicles get her revved up. Ironically though, she loves care rides and will hop into a vehicle if there is a car door open.
We do not know Petunias exact age but she is likely anywhere between 5-7 years old. As for her breed she is likely full pitty. Petunia is so full of love and is absolutely the staff favorite. She has transitioned through a full shelter of loud animals this winter, a huge move to a different location, and gone through a very aggressive treatment, but through it all she has never changed in personality and has been the same ole Petunia we all love.
If you think Petunia would be a good fit for your home and family stop in and visit her today or apply on our website. If you can't adopt please share her post. Lastly if you are able to donate towards her $600 treatment provided by our vet partners Companion Animal Hospital, it will help free up funds to care for other animals in our shelter.
As always thank you for support!
