Josie,

Animal care is a hard, emotional, exhausting Rollercoaster. So many factors contribute to what's best for them. One of the hardest ones is making the decision to end pain and suffering. Even with knowing vets do all they can, we do supportive care and give lots of love, they are ultimately the ones that make their final decision.

Josie (blue female parakeet in middle) 3 years old approximately.

She was a chronic egg layer. For any birds, especially parakeets, this is a huge scary situation. Each time they lay an egg it takes so much out of their bodies.
I had her on calcium. Supplied dummy eggs, removed her from her flock, gave steam baths, applied Vaseline to her vent, and had her in the incubator. The last 2 times she layed an egg, it was taking her alot longer to recover. On 2.22.25 I seen she was really struggling. It takes approximately 3 days for keets to lay an egg. On her 2nd day, I put in incubator, 3rd day she played her egg. 2/25 she had a visit to her vets. Meds were given, she bounced back for a day, then on Friday was not herself at all. I took her to ER. She was diagnosed with Egg peritonitis. An egg is trapped in their abdominal cavity. There's so many factors behind the care of keets because they are so small, it is hard to treat them for this.
We said our goodbyes yesterday. I always feel like we failed them when we have to be their advo ate and think of quality of life.
Josie girl was a very sweet girl. She came to us in 2023 with her mom and 3 other siblings. Loved her new freedom, and loved her fresh food. Always gentle and a little mouthy but knew I loved her.
Soar high, play with all the other animal kids and enjoy your ultimate freedom baby girl. I love you!

We need our communities support!

This year has been challenging to care for Michigan's injured and orphaned wildlife. We depend solely on the generosity of businesses and individuals for funds to care for over 2,000 patients a year that include more than 100 different species. With increased prices on food, medical supplies, utilities and general building costs , we have reached a point where the funds we have to help have been exhausted for the year and we are now unable to take in new patients.

In years past, especially during difficult times, our community has rallied to help us continue saving wildlife. Giving them a chance to be released back into the wild. We are asking again for your help to support our operations and be able to open our clinic back up to wildlife in need.

$50,000 will allow us to open our clinic from November 1st to December 31st.

You can help us by supporting our mission in the following ways. Our annual fundraiser is on November 7th at Chemung Hills Golf and Banquet Center, you can purchase tickets here. https://www.betterunite.com/HowellNatureCenter-wildwonderfulnight2024 This event will directly support our wildlife efforts through various auctions and raffles. A perfect way to support Howell Nature Center and take home an amazing package or two. The second way you can support us is through a direct donation, or monthly gift. You can create your donation here https://howellnaturecentergiving.campbraingiving.com/, or send via mail to Howell Nature Center, 1005 Triangle Lake Rd., Howell, MI 48843.

Have questions or want to talk about your donation? Contact us at [email protected]

From your backyard to our front doors, thank you for your support!

Cassidy:
Male gray cockatiel.
13 years old approximately.
Past diet: seed only
One owner
Surrendered Nov 2nd.
This sweet boy loves his head scratches, doesn't understand step up, but he is getting better already! Plucking around is neck.
Never been vetted. We of course scheduled vet appt, did blood work, and due to his diet he has a vitamin deficiency. This cause sinusitis which might be why he plucks. We are working very hard on diet change, getting his sinusitis cleared up, and letting him be a very spoiled bird. Cassidy is currently on antibiotics and in an incubator in hopes the humidity will help sooth the discomfort of his sinusitis. He will also receive beta carotene with his food.

Bobbi: (we are working on a name change)
Blue opaline Quaker
S*x unknown
Age: approximately 1 year and 2 months
Past diet: seed, anything and everything.
Surrendered Nov 10th
One owner
He is very very curious! Love his head scratches. Doesn't understand step up, but he has been really trying to trust the hands. Never been vetted. We took to vet, did blood work. His liver enzymes are high, this can be and will be reversed with his diet. He has already began eating his pellets!

Welcome to the flock loves!

We are currently working very hard to reverse the damage for these birds. Along with all the others in our care. Birds need to be vetted! They need healthy, safe, and a well balanced diet. This could of all been avoided. This is very costly and time consuming.
We welcome donations!!! We can use bottle returns, paypal, gofundme, Amazon wishlist etc. Anything helps with the support and care of all the babies in our care!

The Howell Nature Center has fallen on to hard times. Due to dire financial strains, they've had to let go staff and close their Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic. They're hoping the community can help.

Cassidy

He was surrendered on 11/2 to us. Less than a week and this handsome boy is exploring, finding his wings, wanting scratches, and learning how to bird.

Cassidy is approximately 13 years old. His vet appt is 11/14. Blood work and health check. He has been plucking, I suspect due to boredom. Won't know if feather follicles were damaged until we give him some time. Our goal is to change diet and let him settle for now.

If you would like to donate for his vet care, we do have a go fund me acct set up for the birds.

Welcome to the flock Cassidy, we can't wait to see your true personality!
