Tomorrow is our longest resident Scout’s 6th birthday. 🎉🎂🐾
We thought there was no better way to tell his story than through the eyes of someone who knows him best. The words below were written by Debbie — a dedicated volunteer who takes Scout on weekly field trips and has helped him blossom into the confident, well-rounded dog he is today.
Here is Scout’s story, in her own words:
Two years.
That’s how long Scout has been waiting.
Earlier this month, Scout reached the heartbreaking milestone of two full years at Adopt-a-Pet in Fenton. And on Memorial Day, he’ll celebrate his 6th birthday there too. 💔
It’s hard to put into words what that feels like when you know Scout.
I’m one of the volunteers who takes him on weekly field trips to give him a break from shelter life, and I can tell you this with complete certainty: Scout is one of the most loving, loyal, and resilient dogs I’ve ever met.
After everything he’s been through, he still shows up ready to connect, ready to trust, and ready to go home.
I would adopt him in a heartbeat, but my own special needs dogs won’t share their space with him 😢
Scout is one of the easiest dogs to spend time with. He’s fabulous on leash (honestly, better than most of my own dogs ever were 😅), loves his outings with volunteers, and is such a steady, dependable presence. In fact, when kennel staff need a calm, trustworthy dog to help socialize puppies, Scout is their go-to guy.
That tells a lot about who he is.
But Scout is also very sensitive. He always has been. Even as a puppy, the world felt a little big for him. Still, he had a family for more than four years — until one day, his whole world was turned upside down and he was returned to the shelter.
After losing the home he knew, Scout had to start over. So yes, Scout needs a special adopter. Someone calm. Someone patient. Someone kind enough to let him move at his own pace and build trust in his own time. Someone who will understand his sensitivities, help him feel safe, and give him the chance to truly settle in. Scout would love to get to know someone before going home with them. And once Scout loves you, he loves deeply.
He does not deserve to spend another birthday in the shelter. He does not deserve to keep being overlooked while other dogs come and go.
Scout deserves a home. A soft place to land. A person who will finally show him that forever really means forever. ❤️
He's so loved by the staff and volunteers that his adoption fee and monthly preventatives have been covered.
Please, if you think you might be the one for Scout, email [email protected]. And if you can’t adopt, please share his story.
The person he’s been waiting for may be just one share away 🍀❤️
