Teaching “Stay Back” — Practical Boundaries for Everyday Life
In this session, Justin is working with Stevie on our Stay Back command - a temporary threshold boundary that also means stop moving forward and wait.
Establishing clear boundaries like this is one of the most practical skills you can teach your dog. Whether it’s pausing at a curb, holding back from rushing into the car, or giving you time to catch up if you’ve let your dog run ahead, Stay Back keeps everyone safe and creates calm, predictable behavior.
And dogs who are reliable off-leash especially benefit from this skill - it gives you a clean, clear way to stop their movement and create a pause before they enter a space, rush toward a distraction, or get themselves into trouble. It adds an extra layer of safety and communication no matter the environment.
By using directional leash guidance and consistent follow-through, Stevie learns to pause, think, and check in with her handler before moving ahead. That moment of stillness can prevent bolting, crowding, and unsafe choices — especially in the real world.
Boundary work isn’t about control… it’s about communication, safety, and helping dogs make better decisions on their own.
