Teaching “Stay Back” — Practical Boundaries for Everyday Life

In this session, Justin is working with Stevie on our Stay Back command - a temporary threshold boundary that also means stop moving forward and wait.

Establishing clear boundaries like this is one of the most practical skills you can teach your dog. Whether it’s pausing at a curb, holding back from rushing into the car, or giving you time to catch up if you’ve let your dog run ahead, Stay Back keeps everyone safe and creates calm, predictable behavior.

And dogs who are reliable off-leash especially benefit from this skill - it gives you a clean, clear way to stop their movement and create a pause before they enter a space, rush toward a distraction, or get themselves into trouble. It adds an extra layer of safety and communication no matter the environment.

By using directional leash guidance and consistent follow-through, Stevie learns to pause, think, and check in with her handler before moving ahead. That moment of stillness can prevent bolting, crowding, and unsafe choices — especially in the real world.

Boundary work isn’t about control… it’s about communication, safety, and helping dogs make better decisions on their own.

The Language of the Leash 🐾

Justin is working with Olivia here, and this session is a perfect example of why clear leash communication matters so much in dog training.

Dogs experience the world physically. Before words… before markers… before food… they feel. The leash and collar become our first “language” together - a simple, consistent way to guide the dog as they learn new skills. This language also works to reinforce obligation with skills they already know in challenging situations when their ears turn off.

When we use the leash correctly:
• Pressure becomes information, not punishment
• The dog learns how to follow instead of resist
• We build trust through clarity, not force
• Our timing becomes cleaner, so the dog’s responses become calmer and more reliable

This is why we emphasize technique - precise leash handling, clear directional guidance, and well-timed releases. Good leash work isn’t about control. It’s about communication.

How Training Your Dog Trains You

One of the things we love most about dog training is that it grows the human just as much as the dog.
When you commit to working with your dog - showing up with patience, consistency, and clear communication - you start to build habits that spill into the rest of your life.
Training teaches you to slow down.
To be present.
To follow through.
To regulate your own energy so your dog can regulate theirs.
To lead calmly, even when things feel chaotic.

Your dog becomes a mirror. If you’re frustrated, unfocused, or rushing, they feel it. When you breathe, center yourself, and communicate clearly, they respond in kind.

That process creates a version of you who is:
✨ More patient
✨ More accountable
✨ More emotionally aware
✨ More confident in your leadership

Balanced training isn’t just about teaching a dog what to do—it’s about teaching us how to show up better.

What is healthy socialization?

One of the biggest misconceptions in dog training is that socializing means contact. In reality, true socialization is all about exposure to different dogs, people, environments, and energies - without needing to interact directly.

In this clip, you’ll see five dogs all “socializing” in their own way:
🐾 Nelly, Oka & Lilo enjoying healthy, balanced play together.
🐾 Torben resting calmly on the couch with Sara, taking in the environment without engaging.
🐾 Olive relaxing on her Place, practicing neutrality around the action.

This mix of play, rest, and neutrality is exactly what we aim to teach at DogBGood. Socialization is about helping dogs become comfortable, confident, and stable - not overstimulated or forced into interactions.

Balanced exposure > forced contact.
Every dog, every pace.

🐾 Post-Surgery Success Story: Colleen & Hank 🐾

Just 9 weeks post-TPLO surgery, Hank is crushing 30-minute walks like a champ! His smooth recovery is no accident. Because Colleen put in the work during our Foundations + eCollar Program, Hank had the skills to make healing easier on both of them.

✅ He knows how to relax in his crate and on Place — keeping him calm and preventing overexertion.
✅ He understands leash communication - making controlled, low-impact walks possible.
✅ He looks to Colleen for direction - reducing stress and confusion during recovery.

This is a great example of how solid training builds more than obedience. It builds trust, structure, and communication that carry through every stage of life.

Way to go, Colleen & Hank! Proud of you both! 🙌

Teaching the “Place” Command with Justin & Keeko

The Place command is one of our fundamental skills. It teaches a dog to settle calmly on a defined spot until released.

Here, Justin is introducing Keeko to Place for the first time. In these early reps, the goal isn’t perfection - it’s understanding. Keeko is learning that stepping onto the bed and staying there earns reward.

This exercise also teaches the human how to use the leash as a directional tool and the dog how to follow gentle leash pressure. We call this the language of the leash - a clear, calm way to communicate what we’re asking without conflict or confusion.

The result? Better communication, more trust, and a dog who can relax anywhere.

The Attention Exercise is our core foundation skill at DogBGood.

Here, Justin and Rowdy are practicing off leash — you’ll see Rowdy staying connected and responsive, even with distractions around. This exercise helps dogs learn that their handler is the most important thing in the environment.

Building this kind of focus starts with engagement on leash, then grows to off-leash reliability through consistent communication, trust, and clear boundaries. It’s not just about obedience - it’s about leadership, teamwork and connection.

First group class of November was a success! It was also a first group for recent graduates Fiona with Juno along with Lauren & Katie with Olive. Rounding out the class were Kristen with Ollie, Megan with Pepper and DBG crew Sara working her pup Nelly and Justin with his girl Rowdy.

We stuck to our own Porter Park to clean up some basics and focus on obedience. With sunshine, blue skies and lots of leaves to trample, it was a great day to be out working pooches!

Big congrats to Mo & Pete and their sweet boy Indy for graduating from our Foundations + eCollar Program!

Indy came to us for help with resource guarding — and while he may be a low & slow kind of guy, his parents brought all the energy and laughs we could ask for! We had a lot of fun teaching them and they made the lessons a blast with their always positive & committed spirits.

Together they learned how to communicate clearly, set boundaries, and build trust in every situation. Way to go, team Indy! 💙🐾

Congratulations to Emily & Thai with their amazing dog, Pippin!

Pippin, a super fun, smart, deaf Blue Heeler, joined us for a 4-week Board & Train to kickstart his training journey… and what incredible progress he made! With clear communication, consistency, and trust, this team has mastered our Basics Program and built a strong foundation for success.

Training a deaf dog requires creativity and teamwork, and Emily & Thai have done an outstanding job learning how to communicate through body language and visual cues.

We’re so proud of how far you’ve all come — way to go, Team Pippin!

At DogBGood, we teach our clients that every doorway is an opportunity for leadership.

Threshold boundaries - like the front door, crate, or gate - help your dog learn to pause, think, and wait for permission before moving through. It’s a simple way to build impulse control, prevent door rushing, and reinforce that you’re in charge of the space.

We start with the “Stay Back” command for temporary boundaries, and build up to permanent ones where your dog automatically respects the threshold without needing a cue.

Consistency and timing matter most. Boundaries only exist if you maintain them every time.

Our Story

Justin is a certified dog trainer with over a decade of experience. He obtained his certification at Canyon Crest K9 Training in Tacoma, WA, where he worked with all breeds and temperaments, including high aggression.

Justin's journey into dog training began when he was a new dog owner and enrolled his then young pup, Porter, into a group class to help him manage Porter's very high energy. When given no instruction or advice, he was told to release Porter into the group for play. Unsurprisingly, the results were less than stellar and the "trainer" told Justin to get control of his dog. "Isn't that what you're supposed to teach me?" he asked. The reply was that Porter couldn't be helped. Unsatisfied and disbelieving, Justin sought out to learn dog training and the rest is history!

Sadly, this story is not uncommon. Many of our clients have also "failed" group classes, been told their dogs "can't be helped" or are "too much." We have been the last resort to more than a few owners and we have cherished the opportunity to change their lives.
