eyelid to rub against the cornea resulting in pain, corneal ulcers, perforations, or pigment developing on the cornea which can interfere with vision. Ectropion: is an abnormality of the eyelids in which the lower eyelid 'rolls' outward or is everted. This causes the lower eyelids to appear droopy. Ectropion exposes the delicate conjunctival tissues that line the inner surface of the eyelids and cover the eyeball, causing drying of the tissues. CARDIAC (OFA) Subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS) is one of the most common congenital heart defects of dogs. The disease is characterized by obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract, resulting in pressure overload on the left ventricle. VAGINAL PROLAPSE: (Dam) is the protrusion of swollen vaginal tissue through the vulva, the external female genital organ, during the heat cycle. In vaginal prolapse, the swollen protruding vaginal tissue may resemble that of a donut shaped mass. Sometimes the mass is mistaken as a tumor. CRYPTORCHIDISM: (Sire) [from the Greek crypto, meaning hidden, and orkhis or orchid, meaning testicles] is the medical term for the condition that occurs when one or both testicles of a male dog fail to descend into the scrotum. This is an excellent program to assist breeds to acheive health and maintain it. Why are Boerboels no longer participating?

The CHIC DNA Repository collects and stores canine DNA samples along with corresponding pedigree and health history information to facilitate future research and testing aimed at reducing the incidence of inherited disease in dogs.
The program objectives are:
- Facilitate more rapid research progress by expediting the sample collection process
- Provide researchers with optimized family groups needed for research
- Allow breeders to take advantage of future DNA based disease tests as they become available
- Foster a team environment between breeders/owners and the research community improving the likelihood of genetic discovery

Breeding With A Purpose

For 18 years OTR (Over The Road) trucking is what I done for a living and loved every breath taking moment of it. Until November 27, 2017 a careless commercial truck driver took it all away from me. In this accident I sustained injuries that crippled me and resulting in an emergency surgery or risk permanent paralyzation. Now out of work and a family that needed my support, this all took me to a very dark place. Through it all my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ kept from losing it all. After rehab and learning to walk again my Dr. suggest I get a dog to assist me. That’s how my Boerboel love affair all began.

After first being captivated by the sheer awesomeness of the South African Boerboel breed, I must admit, I was in love. So the pursuit of this love affair began with buying not one but two puppies. Yes, now I realize that was not where you start, because that start could have very well been the beginning of the most horrific nightmare. Desiring to know more about my amazing puppies I began to research:


  • First, with the origin and history of the South African Boerboel breed. This answered some of my how, what, and why's.

  • Secondly, with wanting to meet other owners of the same breed I joined the American Boerboel Club and Boerboel Owners Group, a FB social media group. It was here where I got my first fright. Hearing and seeing all the genetic health issues being uncovered in the breed with some being debilitating and even life threatening.
