The other night, Dr. Stroupe had the privilege to participate in the Livestock Production Workshop in Howard County offered by MU Extension for our 4-H Youth. Dr. Stroupe educated our 4-H youth in reading drug labels and walked them through an activity with different species. Knowing how to read drug labels and treat animals properly is an important part of producing a safe and wholesome food product. We love sharing our passion with youth in our community and supporting the future of agriculture. We would also like to thank Heather Conrow with Extension for putting on a great program!

Lepto is a real danger to almost all pets in our area. Do you know the breed most commonly hospitalized for Leptospirosis? The Yorkshire Terrier! If you think this is a disease of bigger, mostly outdoor farm dogs, think again. The good news is there is an effective vaccine for Lepto. If your pet is not up-to-date on vaccinations, call today to make an appointment to get them protected!

Spring is here! And with that comes a warning about Leptospirosis, a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:

➡Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
➡ Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
➡ Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
➡ Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)

UPDATE: The owner has been located. Thank you to all of those who shared to get the word out!

A middle-aged to older female German Shepherd with a green collar was brought into our clinic a few minutes ago by a Good Samaritan after being hit on Highway 5 near the golf course in Fayette. She is in critical condition. If this is your dog or you know who she might belong to, please contact us. She has no microchip or tags to identify her owners.
