Common Reptile Breeder Terms

Het (Heterozygous) – An animal with one copy of a specific gene. This can apply to any gene but is most commonly used when referring to recessive traits that the animal carries but does not visually express.
Poss Het – Possible heterozygous; may carry a recessive gene, but it is not confirmed.
Visual – An animal visibly expressing a genetic trait.
Super – An animal with two copies of an incomplete dominant gene. All offspring from a super animal will inherit at least one copy of that gene.
Proven – Has successfully produced offspring and or has produced visual offspring confirming het.
RTB – Ready To Breed.
CB – Captive Bred.
CBB – Captive Born and Bred.
CH – Captive Hatched; hatched in captivity from a wild-collected gravid female.
WC – Wild Caught.
LTC – Long-Term Captive; originally wild-caught but has been established in captivity for an extended period.
S*xing & Group Counts
NPV – No Pores Visible (often indicates a female in species where males have visible pores).
PV – Pores Visible (often indicates a male in species with s*xually dimorphic pores).
S*xed – The s*x has been determined.
Probed – S*x determined through probing.
Popped – S*x determined by manually everting the hemipenes.
1.0 – One male.
0.1 – One female.
0.0.1 – One uns*xed animal.
1.1.3 – One male, one female, three uns*xed animals.
Pair – One male and one female.
Trio – One male and two females.
Reverse trio - Two males one female
Breeding & Lineage
Holdback – An animal retained by the breeder for future breeding or personal collection.
Line Bred – Selectively bred over generations to enhance specific traits.
Outcross – Breeding unrelated bloodlines together.
F1 – First-generation offspring from wild-caught parents.
F2 – Offspring produced from F1 animals.
Oow - Out of water (this applies to amphibians)
Virgin Female – A female that has never been bred.

General Sales Terms
DOH – Date of Hatch.
DOB – Date of Birth.
Established – Consistently feeding and thriving.
Feeding on _____ – Indicates the prey item or diet currently accepted.
NFS – Not For Sale.

Incubation/Hatching Terms
TSM – Temperature S*xed Male.
TSF – Temperature S*xed Female.
Pipped – A hatchling has cut through the egg but has not necessarily emerged.
In Shed (IS) – Preparing to shed its skin.
A useful note for newer keepers:
LTC does not mean CB. An animal can be long-term captive and still have originally been wild-caught.

I was going through some older holdbacks, trying to decide who could move on to a new home, and this guy made the list.
So I fired him up for pictures...
😳 Big mistake.
Apparently he's been sitting here this whole time looking like that, a PASTEL ob, and I never noticed because I assumed he was staying and never really took the time to evaluate him.
Now I'm questioning all of my life choices. 😭
Breeder dilemma at its finest: trying to reduce holdbacks and accidentally creating a stronger reason to keep them. 🔥😩
That said... for the right home, I might be persuaded. 👀🤣
