Senior Cat Health Care

Caring for senior cats involves regular veterinary checkups, adjusting their diet and environment, and monitoring for age-related health issues like arthritis, kidney disease, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism. Key care strategies include providing soft, accessible bedding, ramps for climbing, low-sided litter boxes, and a senior-specific diet that is easy to digest and high in protein. Owners should also ensure they stay hydrated, get regular dental care, and receive parasite and vaccination protection.

Health and veterinary care

Frequent vet visits: Take senior cats (over 7-8 years old) to the vet at least twice a year. Routine checkups, including blood and urine tests, can help detect diseases early.
Common health concerns: Be aware of potential issues such as kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis, hyperthyroidism, and liver disease. Changes in appetite, thirst, or litter box habits can signal an underlying problem.

Dental health: Maintain good dental hygiene through regular brushing and professional cleanings to prevent periodontal disease.
Parasite and vaccination prevention: Keep up with parasite prevention and vaccinations, adjusting the plan as needed with your veterinarian.

Why is Senior Pet Health Month important

Age-related health issues: Senior pets are prone to chronic conditions, such as arthritis, kidney disease, and cognitive dysfunction, which require professional veterinary care.

Early detection: Regular veterinary visits and blood work are crucial for catching these issues early, improving the pet's quality of life and treatment outcomes.

Quality of Life: The month serves as a reminder for owners to focus on their senior pets' comfort, mobility, and overall well-being.

How to observe Senior Pet Health Month:

Schedule a vet check-up: These visits should be more frequent for senior pets (every six months) and include a thorough physical exam, blood work, and mobility assessment. Monitor daily habits: Keep track of your pet's eating, drinking, and litter box use for early signs of illness.

Diet: Work with your vet to create a specialized diet for your aging companion.

Exercise: Offer gentle, regular exercise, such as a good stroll, to help manage weight and mobility.

Grooming: Brush your senior pet regularly, especially cats, to prevent mats and skin issues.

Comfort: Ensure they have warm, dry, and comfortable bedding and consider ways to make their home environment easier to navigate.

National Senior Pet Month is celebrated in November and focuses on adopting senior pets, raising awareness about their needs, and showing appreciation for them.

November is a great time to consider adopting a senior pet from a shelter. Senior pets are often last to be adopted and are at a higher risk of being euthanized.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and petfinder.com founded the holiday to raise awareness about senior pets.
November is a time to show appreciation for senior pets and those who care for them.

Senior pets have unique personalities and needs, such as early detection and prevention of age-related diseases. Some common health conditions in senior pets include arthritis, cancer, dental disease, heart disease, kidney and liver disease, and canine cognitive dysfunction.

If you are interested in adopting a senior pet. Check out some of the local shelters. Also we would love to see some of our favorite senior pet pictures below.

A True Hero Story β€πŸ•

A couple weeks ago Teddy and his family were involved in a devastating fire. Teddy bravely alerted his family to the emergency. Everyone was able to make it to safety due to Teddy's quick thinking, waking his dad up in time to evacuate from the fire.

After a clean bill of health......Please keep Teddy and his family in your thoughts and prayers ❀
