Friends and family, and new supporters....this is one of the reasons we need your help with the petition and meeting with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. Please help us be able to continue to care for coyotes and armadillo in the LDWF Wildlife Rehabilitation program.

This is in the DFW area. However, I have noticed several out and about in our area. Also, I did help Katie Taylor out with the 4 someone reached out to her with earlier this year. They were all eating on their own and released on our property. Team work makes the dream work.

Lots more armadillos sightings as of recently!

🌱Did you know:

-The nine-banded armadillo we see in Texas is a distant cousin of the sloth and the anteater

-This same nine-banded armadillo is the only species of armadillo seen in the United States, though there are several other species found in South and Central America

-Armadillos give birth to four babies: all identical quadruplets

-Armadillos are good swimmers and can hold their breath for up to 6 minutes. They can walk underwater to the other side of a creek/river or inflate their lungs and float to the other side.

-They eat fire ants 🐜

What fun facts do you know about these cool little armored creatures? Share some trivia with us!

HEARTBREAKING 💔 A married couple was checking on an injured possum on the side of the road in Hernando County before the wife was hit by a car, FHP said.

Did you know? Myths and realities in wildlife rescue 🛟 or Motherly instincts and orphan care

Have you heard the myth (false belief!) that “humans touched a baby animal, so mom wouldn’t take the baby back”?

The reality is that the motherly instinct in many wildlife species 🐣 🐿️ 🦅 is so strong that they will take back their babies, sometimes after days of separation. And even further sometimes they will adopt and raise babies that are not their own, like this wonderful mama opossum in the picture.

After coming in with 2 surviving babies who just left her pouch, this wonder Mom allowed 6 smaller orphans who were rescued on a deceased mom 😢 into her pouch👝!*(note that the process is NOT as simple as it sounds..)

Let us know if you had heard that myth of moms rejecting their babies 👶 and comment ⬇️

We will be making some changes this year as we set up our outdoor areas for release, and prepare for inspection. We will be changing our name to Raised Up Wild as we continue to work with the CPA toward our 501c3.

Ears enjoyed a little outside time today to prepare for her upcoming release this spring. Ears had to be overwintered from last year because she was receiving wound care. We have since been handling her as little as possible so that she will again be leary of humans, and be safe to return to the wild.
