Stay in the loop with our July Update.

At Cherokee Flats, we are excited to share some updates and insights from our little farm. As we approach the time to wean our Mini Lop and Creme d'Argent litters, we want to take a moment to educate our community about the importance of this stage in a rabbit's life. Weaning is a crucial process that not only helps the young rabbits transition to solid food but also allows them to begin developing their individuality and personalities.

We take great care to ensure that this is done smoothly and healthily, as it sets the foundation for their future wellbeing. Additionally, we want to keep our customers informed about our breeding schedule. Due to the recent high temperatures, we've decided to place our breeding activities on hold for the time being. This decision was made with the health of our rabbits in mind, as extreme heat can significantly impact their wellbeing and the success of breeding. We appreciate your understanding during this time and encourage you to stay connected with us through our newsletter for the latest updates and educational content about caring for and understanding your pets. Thank you for being part of the Cherokee Flats family!

Cherokee Flats' Bunny of the Month

At Cherokee Flats, we believe that every pet deserves a loving home, and this month we’re excited to feature our Bunny of the Month, 25ML5! This adorable little companion is not just looking for any home, but a special place where it can thrive and bring joy.

What's Next

Rabbits

While we are enjoying the warmer weather, high temps can be dangerous for our furry friends. During the months of June, July & August, Cherokee Flats does not breed our rabbits and allows our girls to take a well deserved break from having kids running around.

This allows us to properly monitor all rabbits for heat related illnesses and to correct and prevent any issues in a timely manner.

Once temperatures begin to fall into the upper 70s and Lower 80s, we will begin the process of making a breeding plan and getting some does bred for early fall babies.

Rats

Since our Mischief are in the office, they have an air conditioner running during the heat of summer. This means we can breed all year long. We currently have one of our males in with our females. We are excited to see what we get out of Winston and the girls.

We should start seeing litters around July 23, 2025. As usual, once babies are born we post birth announcements. When babies are 4 weeks old, we post photos and information to purchase them. They will be ready for new homes at 8 weeks of age.

Guinea Pigs

As of right now, all guinea pig breeding is on hold due to lack of interest in them. If we get some interest we will revisit this topic and adjust our breeding plans accordingly.

Special Note:
Please be aware that there has been a case of Rabbit Hemorragic Disease (RHDV2) in northern IL at a Rabbit Boarding & Grooming facility in Aurora IL. While we understand the severity of this disease, please note that ALL rabbits here at Cherokee Flats are healthy and have no signs of ANY illness., disease, or parasites. This is why we recommend NOT using facilities like this or taking your pet rabbit to parks/camping… ect. And why we do not allow outside visitors other than those scheduled to pick up rabbits/rats/guinea pigs. As a breeder, I do not recommend vaccines for breeding rabbits/babies that are kept outside or in out buildings. To help prevent this disease, we recommend keeping your house bunny INSIDE. Do not take them to a park, camping or even outside for “play time”. Be careful where you get your hay and veggies as they may contain the RHDV2 virus or other disease/parasites that can make your pet very ill or even cause death. Do not purchase products from areas that have confirmed cases of RHDV2. Currently, a majority of states from Texas, Kansas, South Dakota and west have CONFIRMED yet stable-Endemic areas. Please be cautious when purchasing ANY item you provide your pet rabbit as treats, food or toys from locations in this area.

To help prevent spread or to disinfect the animals enclosure, you can spray trays and wire with hydrogen peroxide and allow to sit for 5-10 mins before rinsing off. For a detailed list of approved Disinfectants via the EPA please visit https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/disinfectants-use-against-rabbit-hemorrhagic-disease-virus-rhdv2-list-o

We pride ourselves on the health, safety and welfare of all animals here and providing education to new pet parents. We hope that you appreciate our dedication to our animals just as much as we do.

Search EPA’s list of registered disinfectants for use against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Mini Lop and Creme d’Argent babies are now 2 weeks old! That means in a couple of weeks, these little ones will be posted on our website as available for purchase. Pick ups will be scheduled for the end of July.

I also have some older (2-3 month old) Creme d’Argents that I will be getting on the site within this week.

We also have a litter of Flemish Giants due June 23rd. Mila and Max have given me amazing babies in the past and I am super excited to see what she’ll give me this time.

Rats will be placed in breeding pairs this week with babies being due in 3-4 weeks.

If interested in any current or future litters, please contact us or submit a wait list form via our website https://www.cherokeeflats.com/reserve-your-new-baby-today and submit your reservation fee per animal you wish to purchase. Remember, rabbits are ONLY sold in singles as pets. Rats MUST be purchased in same s*x pairs (2 female or 2 male) or same s*x groups of 3 or more.

Pick up are being schedule on Saturdays or Sundays in the early morning (7:00 am - 10:00 am) and early evening (4:00 pm - 7:00 pm) to help lessen the stress on the rabbits during the heat of the day. On occasion we will have times during the weekdays after 5:00 pm on an as needed basis.

Please keep in mind that we do our best to accommodate everyones schedule only if our schedule allows it.

ALL PICK UPS are by appointment ONLY. No surprise visits allowed (you will be asked to leave), Visits outside of scheduled pick ups are NOT ALLOWED for the safety, health and well being of all animals here.

Just a reminder. We do not have any poultry now. We lost our entire flock in 2022 due to a mink getting into the coop and killing everyone.
