Poor thing. Hope NewNew has a safe & healthy recovery!

On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the Barnstable Police Department received a 911 call reporting a vicious dog attack at a home in Hyannis. The hysterical caller informed dispatch that a dog was violently attacking another dog inside the home.

Officers Brandon Sanders and Rebecca Tatzel-Mandel arrived on scene simultaneously and found the situation to be chaotic. Officers Sanders and Tatzel-Mandel entered the home and located a severely injured pet dog in the kitchen. Officers immediately began administering lifesaving aid to the critically injured dog, named Newnew. Officer Sanders returned to his cruiser to retrieve a medical bag, while Officer Tatzel-Mandel began assessing Newnew’s extensive injuries.

Working together, Officers Sanders and Tatzel-Mandel applied QuikClot and bandages to Newnew’s most serious wounds in an effort to stop the bleeding and stabilize her condition.

The officers then coordinated with Sgt. Butler and Animal Control Officer Charles Lewis to arrange emergency transportation for Newnew to an Animal Hospital for urgent veterinary treatment.

The following day, Officers Sanders and Tatzel-Mandel visited Newnew at the hospital and found her in stable condition, thanks to their efforts and the emergency medical care provided by the veterinary staff.

We’re going to be really honest for a second.

We have not received a single donation toward Tortilla’s care.

Not one.

And this one hit hard.

Tortilla had a medical emergency shortly after arriving. What started as him getting into something he shouldn’t have turned into repeated vet visits, serious liver concerns, and ongoing treatment.

He has now been to the vet four times.

Bloodwork every time. Medications. A strict, special diet. Constant monitoring. And he’s not done yet. He’ll need repeat labs again next week because liver issues don’t resolve overnight.

This is a slow process.

The good news is he’s improving. His levels are coming down and he’s starting to feel better.

But getting him here hasn’t been simple, and it hasn’t been cheap.

This wasn’t something anyone planned for. His foster couldn’t take on the cost, and walking away was never an option. So we stepped in, because that’s what we do.

But right now, we’re feeling it ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

We know everyone is struggling, and we don’t take that lightly. But situations like this are exactly why we rely on support when things don’t go according to plan.

Tortilla is here, he’s safe, and he’s getting what he needs.

If you’ve ever thought about helping, this is one of those moments where it truly makes a difference šŸ’•

If you’re able to contribute toward his care and others like him facing unexpected medical needs, donations can be made through our website or the button below.

And if you can’t donate, sharing this post helps more than you know.
