🚨 IMPORTANT UPDATE: TEMPORARY PAUSE ON DOG ADOPTIONS & INTAKES 🚨
Effective immediately, the Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) is temporarily pausing all dog adoptions and intakes due to four dogs testing positive for Canine Parvovirus in recent weeks and a general rise in cases throughout Harford County.
This decision is made out of an abundance of caution to:
🔸 Protect our current dog population
🔸 Conduct testing and treat affected dogs
🔸 Isolate the illness and prevent exposure to new dogs
Our medical team is working swiftly, following strict protocols, and we hope to reopen in one week.
Good news! Parvovirus does not affect other species, so we remain open for adoptions and surrenders of cats, critters, and barnyard animals.
🗣 “We ask for the public’s understanding as we take these necessary precautions,” said Fernando Diaz, HSHC Director of Operations. “We know this isn’t ideal, but we’re asking pet owners to delay surrendering their dogs for at least a week. If you find a dog and it’s safe to do so, please consider sheltering them at home and notifying us.”
💛 LOST & FOUND DOGS – HOW YOU CAN HELP
If possible, please avoid bringing lost dogs to HSHC. Instead, try the following:
🔹 Post photos & location on social media, lost & found pages, Ring, and Nextdoor.
🔹 Hang flyers in the area where the dog was found.
🔹 Take the dog to a vet to scan for a microchip.
🔹 Fill out HSHC’s Lost & Found Report at https://www.harfordshelter.org/lost-pet-form
🔹 HSHC can loan you crates, bowls, and supplies while they last.
💙 RESOURCES – NEED HELP WITH YOUR DOG?
We kindly ask that you delay surrendering your dog for at least a week if possible. If you're struggling, we’re here to help! Please come in to take advantage of our pet food pantry or seek other resources. We believe that pets should stay with their families when possible, and we're here to support you.
🏡 FOSTERING – HELP US DURING THIS CLOSURE
We are urgently seeking emergency foster parents to provide temporary homes for our healthy, fully vaccinated adult dogs. Fostering not only ensures their safety but also frees up critical space for emergency cases that have nowhere else to go. By opening your home to a dog in need, you’ll be making a direct and meaningful impact—giving them comfort, security, and a better chance at finding a forever home, all while helping HSHC navigate this challenging time.
If you can foster, please email [email protected] or fill out our application: https://www.harfordshelter.org/foster-a-pet
💰 DONATE – SUPPORT OUR ANIMALS DURING THIS TIME
You may also consider donating to help offset the cost of additional testing, medical supplies, cleaners, and kennel supplies. Additionally, our care team is in need of supplies to help with the care of the dogs including blankets, protective gear like booties, vinyl gloves and disposable gowns, dog treats and empty paper egg cartons for enrichment.

🦠 HOW TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF PARVO
To protect dogs from canine parvovirus, it's crucial to keep them up to date on vaccinations. Puppies should begin their distemper/parvo vaccine series at 6 weeks old, with boosters every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks. Adult dogs need an initial vaccine, a booster 2-4 weeks later, and then yearly boosters. Unvaccinated dogs should be kept at home to reduce exposure.
Canine parvovirus is highly contagious, spreading through direct contact with infected f***s or contaminated objects like toys, bedding, leashes, and bowls. Symptoms typically appear 3-14 days after exposure and include diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, fever, dehydration, and loss of appetite. Immediate veterinary care is critical if symptoms arise.
🚨 If your dog shows symptoms, seek immediate veterinary care.
We will update our website & social media with more information, including when dog adoptions & intakes will resume.
Thank you for your patience and support as we work diligently to contain the spread of parvovirus and keep our shelter pets safe. We’re hopeful to reopen soon and appreciate your understanding during this time!
