One of the reasons that I got interested in bit fitting was that I have 5 different horses - all with different physical issues and different ways of going. Now, we all know that a bit doesn't fix everything - I will never claim that it will. A bit can, however make a big difference to a horse that is, say, struggling with balancing issues. You would never choose to have a horse use you for balance all the time - but sometimes they need help. Different bits are made for this purpose - depending on what type of riding you are doing, the designs differ.

These are two short video clips of my own horse Manny - two months apart and with a different bit. Obviously, there has been much training in the two months between these two videos and much more strength, but I switched his bit to a Neue Schule turtle tatio jumper bit . Not sure how many of you are familiar with this bit but it was great option for Manny! It allows me to take a bit of a half halt for balance and it really works. The jumper cheek pieces are very rigid - this helps with steering - for horses that need that. Manny used to be rather downhill and lugging me downward after fences - trainining and this bit change have allowed me to ride him in a much more uphill quality canter that keeps him balanced after fences.

Manny had spinal fusion surgery almost 3 years ago and has been rehabbing and getting stronger and is now back to full training but really struggled this spring with his balance - this bit for us as a team has been rather life changing - I know this isn't typical but I wanted to share in case anyone reading this is struggling with a training issue and feels that possibly a different connection might help.

Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have - I love a challenge!

To follow up with the new bit- I think it’s a win! The purpose was to get Dante more uphill and throat latch open when jumping. He’s still relatively new to jumping in general but I think this bit allowed him to push off the ground and use himself well

Why Lorinery Science for me ? As an adult with grown children looking for a second career, I looked to my strengths and my interests. I have been a lifelong horse person - from the time that my mom put me on a pony at age 2 to today (we won't count how many years that is..) with a brief pause to marry and have kids, I have been riding and competing and learning about horses.

Also - as most of you who know me know, I am a big math nerd - I have an undergraduate degree in Systems Engineering and a masters degree in Epidemiology ( another degree no one has probably heard of ) Both of these degrees are technical research minded programs which have helped mold me into the person I am today.

Back to Lorinery Science (Bit and Bridle Fitting) - This is a career that allows me to to combine my love of horses with my analytical, problem solving background.

Enter the amazing mare in the photo - OTTB Silver Lido - this mare gives you 100% every single ride... but thinks all bits are evil .. This is the horse that really made me think and analyze why certain things work and don't work. There is definitely science behind why certain horses do better in certain setups - based on horse anatomy and bit design.

In the days and weeks that follow, I will post a bit about the process of certification to become a bit and bridle fitter as well as some information that I have gathered along the way that I find interesting.

Please check out my website for more information about me and the process of bit and bridle fitting.

Has anyone ever heard of Lorinery Science?? If not, here's your chance!!

Lorinery Science - the study of how equine bits affect horse comfort, communication and performance. It combines equine anatomy, bit design, and physics to optimize horse welfare. This science focuses on how bits apply, distribute or reduce pressure to the mouth.

Keep reading as I post about my own personal journey into Lorinery Science - the background and impetus that began this journey ...
