Here in KY our babies are loving the limited snow time they get since we are in single digit temperatures right now!
We also want to take the time to share some information regarding keeping your pups safe and healthy in these temperatures!
🧊 IMPORTANT WINTER SAFETY REMINDER 🧊
While snow play is fun, extreme cold can be dangerous, especially with the single-digit temperatures and below-freezing weather many of us are currently experiencing.
✨Why Cold Weather Can Be Dangerous for Dogs:
• Even cold-tolerant breeds can be at risk when temperatures drop too low (such as Golden Retrievers, etc)
• Dogs can develop hypothermia when their body temperature falls below normal. Additionally, Frostbite can occur quickly on exposed areas like paws, ears, tails, noses, and bellies
• Puppies lose body heat faster and don’t regulate temperature as well as adult dogs so if you have a puppy PLEASE limit their snow time!
Prolonged exposure can cause pain, tissue damage, and long-term sensitivity to any frostbitten or affected areas.
❄️Frostbite Risk Areas❄️
• Paw pads and toes
• Ears (especially tips)
• Tail tips
• Nose and muzzle
• Belly and inner thighs
Signs of frostbite may include pale, gray, or bluish skin, swelling, cold or hard skin, pain when touched, or blistering after warming.
🥶 Signs Your Dog Is Too Cold
Bring your dog inside immediately if you notice:
• Shivering or trembling
• Lifting paws off the ground
• Whining or anxiety
• Slowed movement or reluctance to walk
• Seeking shelter or trying to go inside
• Cold ears or paws to the touch
⏱️ Outdoor Time Guidelines in Cold Weather
• In single-digit temps or below freezing, keep potty breaks and playtime short and supervised
• Multiple short trips outside are safer than one long session
• Puppies, seniors, and small dogs may only tolerate a few minutes
• Never leave dogs unattended outdoors in extreme cold
• IF YOUR DOG DOES NOT HAVE GOOD OFF LEASH RECALL PLEASE KEEP THEM LEASHED SO THEY DON’T RUN OFF AND GET LOST IN THESE TEMPS!!
🧼 After-Snow Care
• Dry paws, legs, and bellies thoroughly
• Check between toes for ice buildup
• Watch for cracked or irritated paw pads, moisturize as needed.
• Consider paw balm for extra protection
• Warm your pup gradually — never with hot water or direct heat
Snow days are fun, but warm, safe dogs are happy dogs. When temperatures are extreme, indoor enrichment, snuggles, and mental stimulation are just as important as outdoor play ✨🫶🏽
Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the winter season responsibly ❄️🐕
We would love to see your babies enjoying their snow days in the comments ✨🤍🫶🏽
