I learned to listen to my dog. Wednesday she didn’t feel well and let me know by growling for 16 hours. Yesterday, she told me there was a prickly twig stuck to her harness and poking her. We need to be open to subtle and not so subtle communications from our dogs. The picture is from Wednesday when her belly hurt. She normally doesn’t tuck her legs like this.

It’s raining, and I am finishing my research papers on the canine nervous system. Blizzard is working hard on a food puzzle she just does not quite understand yet. But it’s keeping her occupied. Today is outlet mall day. Going to rock her world a little.

Blizzard update. We had a wonderful vet appointment and she is 100% healthy. Has has put on 2 pounds of muscle. Her stamina has increased significantly, she makes me jog 😳. She has not pottied in the house since Sunday. She waits quietly outside the bathroom while I shower. Loves her housemates and is as cute as a bug! We have signed up for a scent work class starting in January!

Why do we love our dogs through food? Extra weight on dogs is really hard on them. Please be certain to include treats/training rewards as part of their daily ration. Steer clear of dog junk food. Fake bacon, sausages and the cookie bar at the Co should be avoided. Add healthy veggies, brown rice, canned pumpkin to kibble as an alternative to canned food. Think of training, walking or other outdoor adventures as opposed to loving through food. Overweight dogs have significantly lower life expectancies and will incur unnecessary medical expenses. If you are uncertain about your dog’s condition, please ask a canine professional or visit your vet.

As we gather family and friends tomorrow, please consider your dog’s comfort level with all the happenings. Be sure to exercise them well in the morning. Dog play would be best. Manage your guests for greetings and sneaky feedings. Do not feel bad about putting your dog in a bedroom or his crate if he is exhibiting stress. Limit treats and human food. Too much turkey = pancreatitis.

This little girl is the new face of FCPS. Pulled from the Everett Animal Shelter 6 days ago, Blizzard is gaining muscle, confidence and exposure to new experiences. She is learning to hold her urine, not to bite her guardian, and impulse control. Essentially raised in a crate, she became frustrated and reactive and was relinquished. She was only in the shelter 2 days. Lucky me!

These dogs make amazing pets. Very well behaved and once they sprint, they are couch potatoes. Florida hounds need us!

Florida overwhelmingly voted to ban greyhound racing, which means that by the end of 2020, thousands of dogs could be out of jobs. The good news is that you can adopt greyhounds at any time. They are very good dogs.
