In 2009 we began our adventure into the world of elk ranching with our 230 acre hunting preserve in Gilman, WI. The majesty of the elk, red deer, and white tail deer had us hooked. After a few years of guiding hunts we felt we needed to create our own reliable source for animals. In 2012 we started our breeding facility with our first 2 year old cow LuLu. That year we added 6 more cows and a breed

er bull, Thor. We then began our venture into the retail sale of elk meat and products. Our goal is to provide high quality, drug/hormone free, healthy meat that tastes great too. In 2014 we completed construction of our handling facility and hay/feed storage barn. Today we have 26 breeder cows including our prize white cow, Sugar. We have several breeder bulls including Nugget and Sunray with multiple young bulls with top quality genetic backgrounds. Our genetics come from some of the highest quality backgrounds in the United States and Canada including X-Ray, Korean Gold, Bucci, Undeniable, Imperious, and Garmadon.

We’re in the process of our semi-annual deworming on our bulls. This year there’s an added twist. We’re taking tissue samples that will be sent to Dr. Chris Seabury. Dr. Chris Seabury is the Texas A&M University genomics researcher who has been leading the elk industry’s current USDA-funded effort (in cooperation with NAEBA) to develop science-based genetic tools that help identify elk with stronger potential protection against Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) using GEBV. He has received a 2nd grant for continuing this research.

GEBV usually means genomically estimated breeding value. It is a score derived from DNA data that estimates an animal’s inherited potential for a trait in this case CWD. With this information we’re able to estimate genetic susceptibility to chronic wasting disease (CWD) so we can make herd-management and breeding decisions. This is the type of management that will move the needle on the disease, NOT mass killing of healthy animals as the majority of the states Conservation Departments are doing.

Last week we ran all the exposed cows (42 of them) thru and drew blood for pregnancy tests. We got the results back today. We're expecting 37 calves late spring. Very happy with the results as 4 of the 5 open cows were 1yr heifers and 2 of those were white. We have never been able to get 1yr white heifers bred since whites tend to mature a bit slower than browns. However this year we did have 2 of the 4 white heifers bred!
