It’s been a while since my last fun fact Friday!

We would like to introduce you to our little friends…Malassezia ! AKA YEAST 🫣. These are microscopic organisms that inhabit your pets skin (and ears). You can see tiny little “snowman” or “bowling ball” looking organisms made noticeable under the microscope by a special stain. They are normal inhabitants in small numbers, making up the natural flora that is usually kept in harmony with surface bacteria. Some conditions (usually allergies in this climate) allow these guys to proliferate and become an itchy, smelly, and ugly mess on your pet’s skin or in the ears. I have diagnosed yeast dermatitis or otitis already three times today! These preps came from the ears of one dog and the other from the foot of my own dog. We will always perform some kind of microscopic exam in the face of any suspected infection to confirm the presence of microbes so the correct medications are selected. This may be topical and/or oral medication. With appropriate management of the underlying condition and treatment of the secondary yeast infection all these pups today will be feeling better soon (I’m sure glad… my girl is miserable and driving me nuts licking those feet!).

Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day. This may seem sad and solemn, but it’s also important to reflect on the pets that have had so much impact on our lives. When we help our clients say goodbye we can feel the love and gratitude every single time from both the people and their pets. We know that they are always remembered and we remember them too!! Not just our own… but yours as well. Thinking of all of you missing your best friend today!!

It’s Black Cat Appreciation Day! 🐈‍⬛

Days like this are to bring awareness to animals that tend to be loss fortunate with adoption success. Black cats (and dogs) tend to be overlooked in adoption settings. 😕. We know lots of amazing black cats!! Drop a pic of yours!!

I was going to make a cool post but this one really sums it up! Come see us if you want to confirm that your pet’s microchip is functioning. It just takes a second. We have reunited so many pets with their families because of their microchips.

On , we're sharing a few important reminders on the importance of microchips - such as:

➡ 1 in 3 family pets will get lost
➡ Microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners and microchipped cats are more than 20 times as likely to be returned to their owners

And remember - while microchips greatly increase the chances that pets will be reunited with their families if they are lost or stolen…a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate. Visit avma.org/CheckTheChip to learn more.

Adoptable Pet Spotlight 🤩 What a CUTIE!! 🥰

UPDATE!✨

This handsome boy is William! He’s an adorable Schanzuer/Lab/Terrier Mix. He is 1.5 years old and 30 lbs. This guy was pulled from a local overcrowded shelter today with his brother, Harry. This joy is super sweet. He’s great with dogs and kids. He loves attention and playing outdoors. He is utd, hw neg (tested below detectable levels) and neutered!

Our adoptions are NOT on a first come first serve basis and there is no fee to apply! We never state any animal is fully House-trained. New environments, situations, families, routines, ect. can lead to accidents even with the most well trained animals.

All dogs have a $175 adoption fee which includes vet check, age appropriate shots (atleast 2 sets for puppies), dewormer, heartworm test (if over 6 months), rabies (if atleast 16 weeks) and spay/neuter! Puppies will be altered before adoption. All rescues and shelters practice pediatric spay and neuter. This is essential in our rescue efforts and it is a policy that we will stick by. All dogs over 8 weeks and 2 pounds will be altered before adoption. There are no exceptions to this rule on all healthy and adoptable dogs. We have researched and discussed in depth with multiple vets everything on pediatric spay and neuter and from a rescue stand point it must be done. Please do not ask for an extension on spay and neutering, it will NOT be granted on a healthy puppy!

Puppies/Dogs that are not available for adoption due to vetting not being complete can be reserved with an approved application and a non refundable $50 deposit. Deposits can ONLY be submitted once the rescue has been in contact on your approval and it has been requested through Wags and Whiskers. This deposit is applied to your adoption fee and the remaining $125 is due at pick up.

Wags and Whiskers is an all-volunteer rescue. Please allow us time to respond to all inquires and applications! Thank you!

It’s National Assistance Dog Day!! This is a great opportunity to bring awareness to these amazing dogs that are so important. Pictured here is “David” who is specially trained to help Ally with her daily needs and can even alert her family to breathing difficulties.

Assistance Dogs are specifically trained (usually for at least 2 years) to mitigate the effects of an individual’s disability and promote independence and safety. They are highly bonded to their person and often provide benefits even beyond their training!!

We love taking care of David’s health and cheering on this team!
