The Fairfax County Animal Shelter is Fairfax County’s only open-access, municipal shelter. With 4,000 to 5,000 animals coming through our doors each year, the shelter provides a safe place for dogs, cats, and small animals like guinea pigs, rabbits and pet birds to stay while they wait for their forever families. At any given time, visitors to the shelter can choose from 40 cats and kittens, 25 dogs and puppies, and dozens of small animals, all available for adoption. We have a live release rate of over 90%, and are very proud of our excellent volunteer and foster programs, compassionate staff, progressive sheltering policies and practices, and the wonderful animal-loving community we're a part of!

UPDATE: Faith is out on an Adoption Audition! 💕

Faith is smart, sassy, and a whole lot of fun! Nothing is better than chasing a tennis ball thrown by her favorite person. She’ll even show off all her tricks for the small price of one dog treat. Faith has enjoyed playing with other dogs in our care. We recommend bringing any dogs from home to make sure their playstyles match.

Day 1 of was a HUGE success with 93 adoptions in just one day! 🎊🎊 That includes 56 cats, which left many of our cat condos empty (the best “problem” to have). So, we took a road trip to Anne Arundel County Animal Services, welcoming 34 of their adoptable cats to quickly fill those spaces and make sure we have plenty ready to meet you this weekend!

Clear the Shelters continues tomorrow, Aug. 30, and Sunday, Aug. 31, with FREE adoptions for all pets. We have many dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and more eager to go home with you at both our Michael R. Frey Campus in Fairfax and Lorton Campus.

Starting TODAY through Sunday, Aug. 31, adoption fees are waived for ALL pets! Adoption Auditions will also be fee-waived during this time! Virginia residents can bring any dog or select cats and small animals home for a five-day, no-strings-attached trial adoption period. If a pet is an Audition candidate, it will be stated in their bio online.
