Stay weather aware!

** Be Weather-Ready: Check the forecast regularly to see if you're at risk for tornadoes. Listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay informed about tornado watches and warnings. Check the Weather-Ready Nation for tips.
** Sign Up for Notifications: Know how your community sends warnings. Some communities have outdoor sirens. Others depend on media and smart phones to alert residents of severe storms capable of producing tornadoes.
** Create a Communications Plan: Have a family plan that includes an emergency meeting place and related information. If you live in a mobile home or home without a basement, identify a nearby safe building you can get too quickly, such as a church or family member.
** Pick a safe room in your home, such as a basement, storm cellar, or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows. Check more ideas for your family plan at: https://www.ready.gov/make-a-plan
** Prepare Your Home: Consider having your safe room reinforced. You can find plans for reinforcing an interior room to provide better protection on the Federal Emergency Management Agency website.

Snow continues to fall across the county and region this morning. Though snow totals are now expected to be a little less, more sleet will impact our area. Find the latest National Weather Service updates and maps: https://www.weather.gov/lwx/wintermaps

A few things to know:

❄️Stay Off the Roads
Residents are strongly encouraged to stay off the roads today. Virginia Department of Transportation crews need time and space to remove snow. If you must drive, here are some tips from our Police Department: https://fcpdnews.wordpress.com/2026/01/23/snow-much-to-consider-preparing-for-the-weekend-storm/

❄️Guide to Snow
Our comprehensive Guide to Snow has everything you need to know to help get you through this storm: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/snow/

--Tips on snow removal. It takes a whole community to shovel snow. While not legally obligated, we need your help to clear snow in front of residential or business properties so everyone, including school children, people with disabilities and the elderly, may use them safely.

--VDOT’s snowplow tracker. The Virginia Department of Transportation (not Fairfax County) removes snow from most county roads. View VDOT’s Plow Tracker to check the status of your road and see what’s been cleared.

--Who to contact for downed trees and wires. The freezing rain and ice associated with this storm could lead to trees and power lines falling. Know who to call if that happens.

❄️Hypothermia Help
If you see an unsheltered person who may be at risk of hypothermia, call the police non-emergency phone line at 703-691-2131, TTY 711.

❄️County Operating Status
All county facilities are closed today, Sunday, Jan. 25. These closures include libraries, community centers, recreation centers, parks and other county facilities and programs. Essential services and emergency operations are not impacted, including public safety response and the hypothermia program. Fairfax Connector has also cancelled service for today.

If there are changes to the county’s operating status or department programs and services, they will be listed on our Operating Status page: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/status

❄️Salt Properly
While salt helps get rid of ice, too much can be harmful to our drinking water, dogs, aquatic life, trees, vegetation, vehicles, pipes and infrastructure. So, don’t over do it. For example, a 12-ounce mug of salt should be enough to treat a 20-foot driveway or about 10 sidewalk squares.

A significant, long-duration winter storm will bring widespread heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain from the Southern Rockies to New England through Monday. Widespread travel disruptions, prolonged power outages, and vast tree damage is likely. Frigid temperatures, gusty winds, and dangerous wind c...
