I'm not a big fan of the round bales, but do feed them in the winter. What are your thoughts?

As many horse owners start the process of planning out their fall and winter hay supply, many may be considering purchasing round bales for their equine companions due to cost-effectiveness and greater convenience for feeding pastured animals. However, it's important to remember that there are a few things to consider when choosing between square or round bales.

• Are you equipped/prepared to store your hay correctly?
Improperly stored round bales can lose much of their nutritional value and are also more susceptible to mold, dust, and bacteria growth, which can cause respiratory issues and even colic.

• Are your horses protected from botulism?
Round bales provide an optimum environment for the development of the botulism toxin. This toxin is produced when "Clostridium botulinum" is exposed to the right environmental conditions — such as when forage materials are baled and stored while still damp, or when they include the carcasses of dead animals, like birds and mice.

Prevention of this disease through vaccination is critical, especially in areas where the condition is prevalent (such as Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, California, and Tennessee).

• Are round bales a good choice for your horse?
Horses prone to respiratory conditions usually have increased problems with round bales due to their higher dust content.

• Do you have a feeder to place your round bales in?
Round bales not placed in a feeder can create more waste, which means your horses may not be meeting their nutritional requirements.

• Can you secure high-quality round bales?
Not all hay is created equal. Be sure to choose high-quality hay to meet your horse's nutritional needs and minimize the risk of impaction colic, which increases with lower-quality, less digestible forage.

As always, your equine veterinarian remains your best source of information and advice—consult your horse doctor on best practices when feeding hay this fall and winter!

JFK's Gone Platinum. 3 year old blue roan registered Tennsssee Walker. This guy has been with me since he was 5 months old. He's the 1st to greet you at the gate. He absolutely loves attention and love. He's so gentle. Has an amazing NATURAL gait. Lunge him and he's gaiting. Platinum has papers that read like the who's who of champion breeding. This is not a traded horse. No horse sale or flipper. I bought him to be part of my breeding program and to be part of a team to pull a wagon. He is currently a stud, and he's so gentle most anyone can ride him now. I will geld him at buyers expense. Selling at $12,500 as a stud. Should top out at 15/1. Horse just like him went for 26k last fall at the Bowling Green horse sale. I want him to find a good home, not the highest bidder, so I'm going to be picky about where he goes. Pm me, text me, or call me for more info 270-293-8738

This is the last time Feather will be available through G&G. She has been with me since December 2024, so she has to be moved. I'm dropping her price to $2500. You are not getting a 5k horse. She's a mare, and can act like one. With another horse, she's a dead head. Alone, sometimes she's a dead head, sometimes she's a stubborn brat. She has a very nice gait, but leans trotty, so you want to keep weighted shoes on her rear end. She backs her ears at feeding time, but I walk right into the stall with her 2x a day. No kick or bite, just a mare. She is hard to catch!!!!!! When we are riding her every day, she is in a stall or a very small pasture. Easier to catch when she is alone. She is excellent with other horses. Eats out of the bucket with them. Once caught, she's sweet. Stands great for tacking, mounting, bathing. Good with feet. She loves to just walk, so a bump spur might be needed. If you're interested in Feather, before she goes to the sale, her price is $2500 and I'll deliver up to 60 miles for free. See her video in comments.

🧨 Maximus 🧨
Maximus is a 11 yr old 15.2hh grade racking gelding. Maximus has mainly been trail ridden and used for lessons here and there. He stands for the farrier, clipping, saddling, mounting and bathing. He is safe around dogs, fireworks, goats, sheep and traffic. Will ride out alone or in group and has a very smooth gait. Safe for Beginners and up,

We have some nice horses at the farm. I'm going to start selling several of them. All ages, colors, stages of experience, etc. I would like to offer some different buying options.

1. Auction on the page. Highest bid in the comments wins.

2. Buy a chance to own the horse. Each chance would be $100.

3. Reserve auction with a buy it now.

What do you all think? Pics and video would be provided.

I would probably have close to 10 horses we would start with, from 2 years old to 18 years old.

I'm going to have to read this.

Ever wanted a gaited mule? We have a gaited mammoth jack stud that throws the color, the size, and the sweet, gentle temperament. This is Eyore, aka, Donkey. He's our feral, free roaming, loving, silly donkey. We sure do love him. He's available for breeding only. We will have at least 2 babies from him next year.

For those close to the fireworks.

With the just around the corner, now is a good time to make preparations to keep your horses, farm animals and pets safe during any fireworks that will be happening in your area. 🎆

The graphic below lists some tips to get you started. If your horses are staying out overnight, be sure to check your fencing ahead of time and neutralize any hazards like rocks, branches or holes that could lead to injury if the animals start bolting. If you are really worried about your horse's safety, consult your veterinarian about calming agents and sedatives.

No matter what your Independence Day plans are, above all please remember to practice safety and be considerate of the people and the animals living around you so EVERYONE may have an enjoyable celebration. Happy 4th!

Thank you to our Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.
