Spring is here and your wanting to get that yard in shape. Please don't forget about your four-legged friends. Certain types of chemicals, plant food, insecticides, and fertilizer used by homeowners can actually be detrimental to the health of your four-legged family members. Learn what to do and what to avoid by reading on as we detail a few pet-safe lawn care tips.

Chemicals

Certain pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides are unsafe for animal consumption. Pets should be kept off and away from any areas after application while the products dry. Please take the time to read the warnings on any chemical you use! Your pet should be taken to the vet immediately in the instance that they do consume any of these materials. Remember to Clean the application area after applying lawn chemicals by sweeping away any granular residue and diluting any spilled product with water.

Fertilizer and Mulch

Fertilizer and mulch can both be dangerous to your animals when consumed in large portions. Many dogs find organic fertilizer a good treat. Fertilizers are often filled with blood and bone meal and fish byproducts. Organic fertilizers make a tasty snack for dogs but can harm digestive systems. Try looking for pet-friendly products instead. When buying mulch for your beds, steer clear of the cocoa variety. This particular mulch formula smells sweet and contains theobromine, the ingredient found in chocolate that is toxic to dogs.

Avoid and Remove Toxic Plants

Certain mushrooms and plant leaves can be poisonous when consumed your dog. Try to avoid growing any of the plants listed below as they have been known to pose mild to extreme health risks for cats and/or dogs.

Amaryllis, Oleander, Lillis, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Laurels and Autumn Crocuses are just a few. If you are not sure, spend a little time while planning your plantings to do research on the plants you are choosing.

Equipment and Machines

Make sure that your dogs are inside or away from the area when you’re operating a leaf blower, lawn mower, aerator, edger or other power equipment. Your dog may be over excited by the noise and run into the equipment. Dogs can become very fearful and the stress in counterproductive to your dog's mental health!
