ParrotSleds Ever have a dream that you thought might be out of reach? How do you know for sure unless you try? Did you ever have a Dream? It happened in 1925, in Nome Alaska.

Ever hear a story of perserverance that inspired you to want to accomplish great things? It's a magical story with a Hollywood ending. Sick children running out of options who are rescued by heroic teams of sled dogs and their mushers. Without any way to get medicine to critically ill children due to the weather conditions, a miracle happened, and man's best friend saved the day. The Iditarod is a

1150+ mile dogsled race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska in March, traversing some of the world's most intense terain and climate conditions. The race celebrates this great story and has captured the hearts and imaginations of people from all around the world. In the race's near 40 year history, competitors have come from around the globe to test their mettle. No one from North Carolina has ever completed the Iditarod. Our goal is to become the first team from North Carolina to complete the Iditarod. Dogsledding in NC!?!? Yes, and why not! Dreams are not bound by geography. If you work hard enough, anything is possible. We have found the trailhead and are beginning our journey...

Well, we were supposed to be at copper basin now. But as we bit our nails to see if our transmission repair would be complete, Wednesday night I got the call and at 1800, Blue came home, drop bags put together, Lori made it in from Manly and by 9 am friday the team was on the road. The roads were still scary, passing 3 cars flipped over. On time in Delta, we made the turn, sun was beautiful. But at mile 219 we came across a moose on the side. At anytime our top speed was 45mph, but sliding on the road, we couldn't stop the fully loaded truck. Unfortunately the moose limped off, broken leg. I am devastated. She had a calf with her. I can't say how sad I am. I am hoping either the calf was caught or old enough to live on his own. Maybe someone who was in desperate need now is able to fill their freezer and make it through this winter. (there is a road kill list people can sign up for).
The dogs and team are all okay 💕
Our race season is over.
But we will not stop running!

New hike stove arrived. Going to try with mushing this year. Usually I just put a pan over my cooker as I melt snow, it heats my food. Sometimes I don't need to make a full meal for the team. My jet boil seems bulky and fragile for the rough spots we go through. Not to mention carrying fuel packs, mine can run with any fuel, including methanol. But this looked interesting, only 14 ounces...so giving it a try!

Much luv from Gypsy....
Gypsy was my first Alaskan. She was from Mackey's leader Zorro, her mother was Omen. The dogs from this kennel we're all rescues. But I did have one litter on my birthday with her producing three boys. Odin decided to break 4 collars this summer giving me a few unexpected litters. She will live on through them. Let's see where we are in a few years! Much luv from her. Always sleeping with me, a dog who never rode in a dog box. While I am devastated, she is resting well.

Winter is upon us, we had our first snow yesterday!
We had quite a slow summer with the rain and covid...hopefully the winter will bring some fun!
The season kicked off with a great sign up event with the Quest organization. The race looks the same, but new name given the changes we have to make with covid. My friend Arthur from Arizona even was here to help celebrate!
We started our training October 6th with the traditional small teams to get everyone into the routine of hook up, running and leading. The teams are divided to give the solid leaders time to refresh their gee/haw and the dogs who were leading, but need may need more reinforcement are in swing.
Next week we will increase miles and then work on camping the following week.
Excited for the new season!

Chatanika Pirates represented in the Quest canoe race last weekend!
Thanks to Yukon Quest, Dave Dalton, Georganne Brainard, Barb and the others who did the extra to make it happen...and make it so much fun! Seeing all the smiles as we came into the checkpoints helped us to keep going :P
The other competitors Dave Turner, AnnMarie Alaski and friends Jimmy Lebling who made it out. Awesome save by Lee Lowery getting me back to my truck because we didn't plan ahead and park the other truck at the finish line hahaha. A special thanks to my musher Christopher Hayden for not being too demanding and just having fun along the way, it was awesome! (I was the handler). We took the spirit of the north prize and red lantern! Lots of fun!
