Behind the Scenes with our “Big Dogs”: Opal

At first, Opal was not meant to be one of our breeding dogs. She is part of Georgia’s first litter, the States Litter, and was named “Cali” for California. She went to a home for about 6 months, and then they asked to rehome her, which I was happy to do. However, once we got her back, I fell in love! She was eager to please and bonded with us immediately. She really thrived with our family!

When she came back, I didn’t love her new name so we tried out a couple. The first was Nala because I grew up on The Lion King, but I finally settled on Opal. My Dad is a huge rock enthusiast and found an opal to have cut into a ring for me years ago. She’s also obviously the creamy color of an opal. It really does suit her (and who knows…I may use Nala down the road!)

Opal is a stellar dog. Her recall is absolute perfection. If I call her name, she immediately stops and turns to look at me. I never even had to teach her this—she is just so eager to please that she does it naturally. Therefore, I rarely walk this girl on a leash unless it’s for safety or for others that might be nervous around unleashed dogs. She is fantastic on the leash when I do need to go that route. She is docile and gentle and sweet-natured and just an all round lovely dog!

Opal’s favorite dog is probably Stormy followed by Maggie. Her and Stormy spent a good deal of time together when Stormy first arrived, and I think they bonded. I honestly don’t think Opal has any affinity for Georgia in particular even though they are mother/daughter. They get along just fine. Opal is very submissive just like her Mama and usually just tags along behind the leaders.

Behind the Scenes with our “Big Dogs”: Winnie

Winnie is not named Winnifred. However, she gets called that just as much as Winnie because she is totally a Winnifred even though her nickname is longer than her actual name. Winnie was named after Winnie the Pooh because she was a round little puppy with a yellow-y apricot coat and is as sweet and docile as a teddy bear.

Also, I do believe that Winnie could be a cartoon character. She reminds me of Dug in the movie “Up!” Winnie is excited about literally everything and is as goofy as it gets. Her whole body wriggles back and forth when she is happy (so all the time), and she almost bounces with her front feet going up and down off the ground in excitement. She loves a good butt scratch and will turn her body away from me to make sure I get the right spot. But because she’s so juiced on life, she’ll just keep turning in circles when we pet her because she also wants her head petted. She’s an absolute nut!

Winnie is Delta’s daughter and Dottie’s sister. She is built just like her Mama: thick! Winnie is SO strong just like Delta was and doesn’t realize she’s a big dog. She’s a bull in a china shop. Just a very happy and silly bull who would like to be in your lap. I never intended keeping two puppies from this litter, but I feel in love with this chonky puppy and just couldn’t let go of her (swipe to see her puppy picture).

Winnie is honestly terrible on the leash. Everyone else “gets” it, but Winnie’s vigor for life has her sometimes yanking our arms out of place and not having a single clue that she’s doing it. Ironically, she gets walked every. single. day. I think she has short term memory loss. 😂 My 12 year old daughter is the one that walks her, and she does a great job of keeping Winnie under control!

Behind the Scenes with our “Big Dogs”: June

June is our newest and youngest addition! She’s made appearances in my stories but nothing official has been posted just yet. With me having to use studs from other breeders these past 8 months, it has left me with several litters to potentially keep a puppy that could eventually be bred with Cruz. That’s where June comes in!

June was “Madi” from the Presidents Litter, Georgia’s daughter. There is no easier dog than Georgia, and Madi exemplified those same traits early on! I just couldn’t let her go when it came down to it. June’s Dad, Oliver, also has a similar temperament, and is a certified therapy dog from a wonderful breeder and dog trainer in Charlotte.

June is docile, compliant, and easygoing. She is just like her Mom but a bit fluffier because she’s an F1 compared to a Golden Retriever. She does not care for the leash just yet and can be a crate cryer from time to time, but overall June is a as good as gold! This little girl also gets her name from my favorite month of the year. There’s just nothing like summer!! ☀️ June also LOVES the lake!

Here’s a fun trait about this little girl: I have a puppy play area set up with a fence around it that is 2 feet high. It allows the younger puppies to play without me worrying that they’ll get into something they shouldn’t. This girl can scale that play area fence no problemo! What’s funny is that not only does she jump out, but when I start putting the older dogs in their kennels, she jumps INTO the fence! It’s like she’s saying, “I’ll be just fine in here if you don’t put me in my kennel.” I can tell she’s a problem solver already!

Another thing I love about this puppy is that she just enjoys hanging out. Of course, she quite likes attention, but she is content laying down nearby when I’m busy. Then if I walk away, she will just trail right behind me. She’s an easy puppy, and I know she’s going to make a great Mom one day! For now she’s enjoying cuddling in our laps, swimming in the lake (not always with permission 🙃), playing with the big dogs (she likes them all!), and getting head scratches (her favorite!).

Behind the Scenes with our “Big Dogs”: Nessa

Where to even start with this girl?!

Nessa is from my first ever litter of Goldendoodles and is set to retire this year. She came from Nora, and seeing all of the puppy personalities in the N Litter, I absolutely fell in love with Nessa. Her puppy picture (see the 2nd picture) about kills me every time it pops up! From the very beginning, Nessa was the adventurer, the go-getter, and the entertainer. There has never been a boring moment with her!

Nessa is the smartest dog that I have and also the most intuitive. She knows exactly what I am saying and thinking. She reads my body language well. One time, I was about to give her the “kennel” command, and she went in her kennel before I said a word. She just knew it was coming. If I point my arm in one direction, she will walk that way. I never taught her that—she just knows some things because she closely watches me.

Nessa is the most loyal dog on the planet. I feel confident that a couple of my dogs would hop in a car with a stranger and still be pretty content. Not Nessa. I think this dog would fight a pack of wolves for me given the opportunity. She is fiercely loyal and loving, and I think we have a special bond that has come from her being in the first litter.

Nessa is also our talker. I don’t even know how to explain it because it’s not a bark or a howl. She just jabbers at us like she’s participating in the conversation. She also sneezes as soon as she comes out of the kennel or when she’s romping around with us. I finally researched this behavior, and it’s a sign that dogs use to show that they are playing in a submissive manner. She is full of personality!

Behind the Scenes with our “Big Dogs”: Magnolia aka “Maggie”

Listen, I don’t have favorite dogs. I love them all equally yet uniquely because they are all amazing and loving dogs…but also oh so different! But, if I did have a top contender, Maggie *might* be that dog.

The reasons I love Maggie are simple: she is slow, and she is dumb, and that makes her the goofiest and happiest dog on the planet. The world could be falling apart, and Maggie would still be sitting there smiling not having a clue at her impending doom.

For instance, Maggie knows one trick—“sit”, and she is so very proud of herself when she does it. She plops her rear end on the ground, and her tail slowly waves back and forth in sheer jubilation that she got it right. She operates on one brain cell, and I will forever take a stand on “The dumbest dogs are usually the nicest.” She has the drive of an old, beat-up truck and loves to just be.

Maggie is also built like a thick, round barrel with a block head. She is our biggest dog weighing in at 65-70 pounds on a good day. Ironically, her sister Georgia is 45 pounds and is built more like a greyhound. Maggie moves at about the pace of a toddler and loves to mosey around the yard. She often doesn’t get the privilege of a leash because she doesn’t need one. She is not fast, and if she did try to run off, I feel confident I could catch her. However, as soon as Maggie hits the water, she moves like a fish! She loves to fetch sticks in the lake and glides gracefully through the water!

Maggie is an excellent Mama! Top notch. She would feed 1000 puppies if she could, and I can see it in her eyes that she really loves her babies. She may not be the brightest dog, but she is a huge teddy bear and lover of all of our puppies. Maggie is my only dog to ever have a C-section (which was traumatizing for both of us…at least she’s forgotten about it), and I’m thankful she’s successfully had other litters without having to go that route again.

Behind the Scenes with our “Big Dogs”: Next up is our girl Lemon!

Lemon is a Dottie x Dash puppy! As far as coloring goes, she is almost an exact mirror of her Mama. As far as coat is concerned, she is much more like her Dad as Dottie has a straight coat, and Dash had tight poodle curls. Lemon is the perfect mix as a red, curly F1B Goldendoodle with velvety curls! She just got her spring hair cut so you can’t tell!

Lemon was supposed to be our ode to Dash thinking she was part of his last litter, but surprise, Nessa and Dash brought us 5 more puppies! Still, with Dottie having a litter of 13, and 8 of them being girls, I had a good group of puppies to choose from and had my eye on this girl! There were several close contenders, but Lemon was the perfect balance of confident and driven but not too energetic.

Since finding out we were keeping Lemon, my 12 year old has claimed her as her own dog. She has spent countless hours bonding with Lemon, and because of this, Lemon knows the most tricks out of all our dogs. My favorite trick is that Lemon knows how to come and stand between our legs, which is convenient if you’re stuck in a crowded waiting room at the vet, but it is also incredibly humbling because Lemon LOVES to run through our legs at random times to show off her trick. Being a 45 pound dog, she has almost knocked me over a couple times with her “trick” catching me off guard, and she always is just looking at me smiling afterward like “Aren’t you so proud of me?!”

Lemon got her name because I have wanted a dog named Lemon for awhile and finally claimed her as the one! We have lots of girl dogs whose names end in “a” or “y”/“e”, and I wanted a name that was different. Ironically one of my favorite TV shows has characters named Lemon and Magnolia, which I now have used both those names. Additionally, one of the things that I remember most about my grandfather is that he always had lemon drop candy in his truck. So Lemon’s name has some meaning, but I also just like it! We also call her Lemon-ade, Lems, and Lemmie.

CANYON HAS A HOME!!!

Canyon has been hanging out with us for the past (extra) month because of his weak eyelids rolling inward. They have improved greatly—one is completely healed, and one is about 90% better. He’s got a lot of extra skin, and he’s finally growing into it! Therefore, it’s time to find him a home!

Not sure if you can tell, but Canyon is a CHUNK! He was born December 31st so he has gained some lbs fairly quickly as a standard F1 Goldendoodle. He should be about 60 pounds full grown. He is just like his Mama Maggie—round, slow rolling, sweet and loving, and easygoing. We adore him, and honestly if he were a girl, I would consider keeping him. His temperament is top notch as he’s the chillest guy! We love watching this big boy mosey around, and he loves being the biggest baby.

Send me a PM about Canyon, and I’d love to answer any questions about him, his pricing, and my program.

Behind the Scenes with our “Big Dogs”: Dottie

When Delta, the namesake and starter dog of my program was about to retire, I knew I wanted one last puppy of hers to keep her lines going as a tribute to her (side note: Delta is alive and well and living high on the hog in Charlotte with the sweetest retired couple). I bred Delta to a stud in Charlotte with a breeder I’ve used several times that I love and trust! Delta, always having small litters, had 3 puppies.

When I saw Dottie’s coloring and markings, I knew she was THE one…except I also kept her sister, which will be featured in another behind the scenes post. 😇 As a puppy, Dottie went almost 8 weeks without a name because I love names with meaning, and I couldn’t find the right fit. I finally settled on Dottie because it started with a “D” like her Mama’s name, and She also had a big red circle (dot) on her belly and eventually her legs became spotted as well. Also, Dorothy, the name from which Dottie is derived, means “gift of God”. My kids laugh when I say this because we never call her Dorothy, and she’s gifted us with some chaos a time a two. 😆

Dottie is SMART and has a high drive. I consider Nessa our smartest, most driven dog, followed by Dottie and Stormy. Dottie has taught herself how to open doors with lever-like handles, which means we have come home to some fun surprises since the doors were not rooms she was supposed to be in! She has even let herself and our other dogs out of the front door on a handful of occasions. Freedommmmm! She also has zero respect for fences and will figure out a way to get on the other side in mere seconds. Nothing holds her back—she loves to figure things out!

With all that intelligence, I will also say that she is one of the most affectionate and adoring dogs I have! She wraps her paws around our arms and holds them there when we pet her as if she’s holding onto us. It doesn’t matter how much attention she gets, in true Goldendoodle fashion, no amount is ever enough.

Behind the Scenes with our “Big Dogs”: Next up is our poodle Stormy!

Over a year ago, Facebook correctly targeted me when I scrolled to a post from a breeder that was closing their business in Florida. Their almost 2 year old Merle poodle caught my eye right away! I had never had a female poodle, but I sent the breeder a message to ask about her. I discovered the breeder had 4 kids just like me and had very similar breeding practices with a heavy emphasis on family involvement.

As random as it seems, I considered it the perfect match up! We drove to Georgia in the rain to meet “Georgie”, which was her name for the first 2 years of her life. Since we already had a Georgia, I renamed her “Stormy”, which fit her perfectly. It rained the whole day when we got her, her blue Merle reminds me of a storm, and she is as fast as lightning! ⚡️

Stormy is what I call our “nosey poodle”. She is as smart as a whip and wants to have her nose in everything (literally). She has to go into everyone’s whelping box to visit all the puppies even when the Moms are not so keen on sharing their space. When let out of the kennel, she immediately does a round to check everything out to make sure nothing new has transpired. If you leave any sort of human food or treat on the counter, that girl’s nose will find it, and the food will find her stomach. She is crafty and has figured out how to take lids off trash cans without knocking them over to get herself a leftover slice of pizza. This girl lives up to her poodle genes and is so intelligent! It takes some effort to outsmart her sometimes!

Stormy also loves to use that same nose to wiggle her head right under my arm or hand for me to pet her. She will forcefully lay her nose onto my leg so I know she’s ready for attention. She absolutely loves following me around and pushing that nose right where she wants. She will weasel her way in between other dogs and me so that she can be first in line too. Stormy is a LOVER in every way as she both gives love…and receives love. I’ve never met a person she doesn’t like as long as they pet her and tell her she’s pretty. 🤩😉

Bonnie is still available! Please reach out if you’re interested in her! My contract has always stated that I’ll take back any of our dogs at any age in order to ensure they make it to good homes, and that is still the case with this sweet pup! Her perfect place is out there!

In the meantime, while we’re on a puppy break until early April (with hopefully several F1B litters), I wanted to start a series called Behind the Scenes with our “Big Dogs” where I tell about each of the dogs in my program.

Today’s feature is Cruz!

As you may know, we lost our stud Dash in August of last year, which meant starting the search for a new male poodle. Initially I wanted a smaller guy as Dash was right under 50 pounds, but I did not realize how hard it would be to find a genetically clear mini poodle. Apparently, they are unicorns, and I don’t breed those. 🦄😆

A genetic test came out in 2017 that would test for a condition that could cause chronic back issues in dogs, and almost all mini poodles are at least a genetic carrier of this. I spoke with breeders all over the continental United States and couldn’t find a mini poodle without it, and it wasn’t something I could ethically or responsibly add to my program.

Much to my amazement, I finally found a breeder 30 minutes from me in South Carolina with poodles that had already been individually genetic tested for this specific marker. Cruz was larger than I had wanted (he is a Moyen and should be able 40 pounds full grown), but he is in perfect health!

On top of that, he had the temperament I required in a stud: calm, easygoing, and docile. He is the best boy on paper and in real life! I gave him the name Cruz because it means “cross” in Spanish, and as we are believing Christians, I love that there’s significance to it + it’s just a unique name.

Clay has a home! Still have Bonnie & Canyon!

1. Clay: He is our gorgeous red F1 Goldendoodle and is part of the Land Litter. His Dad is a 45 pound poodle, and his Mama is our 65 pound Golden Retriever named Maggie, who is calm, cool, and collected. We expect Clay to be the same way. He may already be 14 pounds (all 3 of these boys are our largest litter yet), but he says he is a lap dog. Snuggles forever! He’s been to the vet today and got the “all clear” and his first round of shots. He can go home Sunday 2/23.

2. Bonnie: Bonnie is from our B Litter and was born October 24th and was returned to us this past week. She’s a black F1B Goldendoodle. She’s been hanging out with our dogs and puppies and has been having the time of her life. I know because when it’s time to go inside, she makes me chase her. She will shower you with love and kisses, is comfortable in her crate, is up to date on all shots, and went to the groomer for the first time today. Groomer says she did great! She can go home anytime and is slightly discounted.

3. Canyon: Canyon is also part of our Land Litter, but he has weak eyelids so I am keeping him a couple extra weeks as they do tend to outgrow this. He will be available soon so keep your eye out (pun intended)! Picture coming soon!

Send me a PM to ask about any of these pups!
