Behind the Scenes with our “Big Dogs”: Opal
At first, Opal was not meant to be one of our breeding dogs. She is part of Georgia’s first litter, the States Litter, and was named “Cali” for California. She went to a home for about 6 months, and then they asked to rehome her, which I was happy to do. However, once we got her back, I fell in love! She was eager to please and bonded with us immediately. She really thrived with our family!
When she came back, I didn’t love her new name so we tried out a couple. The first was Nala because I grew up on The Lion King, but I finally settled on Opal. My Dad is a huge rock enthusiast and found an opal to have cut into a ring for me years ago. She’s also obviously the creamy color of an opal. It really does suit her (and who knows…I may use Nala down the road!)
Opal is a stellar dog. Her recall is absolute perfection. If I call her name, she immediately stops and turns to look at me. I never even had to teach her this—she is just so eager to please that she does it naturally. Therefore, I rarely walk this girl on a leash unless it’s for safety or for others that might be nervous around unleashed dogs. She is fantastic on the leash when I do need to go that route. She is docile and gentle and sweet-natured and just an all round lovely dog!
Opal’s favorite dog is probably Stormy followed by Maggie. Her and Stormy spent a good deal of time together when Stormy first arrived, and I think they bonded. I honestly don’t think Opal has any affinity for Georgia in particular even though they are mother/daughter. They get along just fine. Opal is very submissive just like her Mama and usually just tags along behind the leaders.
