Tycho and I had an amazing time at ClickerExpo 2026. Tycho walked around the conference with a big grin on his face and mostly napped through presentations.
But, even his napping was disruptive at one point. He was having such an epic dream, featuring full-body sleep leaps, that the speaker had to stop to appreciate his enthusiasm.

I was brave and signed us up for a demo session with Melissa Millett from The Ultimutts. I was pretty nervous about training in front of an audience, but Tycho had a blast. When I told the audience that Tycho is twelve years old, there was a collective “awww!” and his tail started swishing. By the end of the conference, many people knew his name and greeted him with “Hi Tycho!”

I learned a lot and left feeling inspired!

Tycho and I are heading to ClickerExpo New York tomorrow! We stopped at our favorite self-service dog wash today. Tycho is now extra handsome for our trip!

I’m looking forward to sharing all about our conference experiences!

A bit late, but please join me in congratulating Joule and Diana on earning their AKC Trick Dog Novice (TKN) title!

Diana does such an incredible job of using play as a reinforcer. Her timing is excellent, and she is so generous with her reinforcement, which makes it so fun for Joule. When Joule does her “in your house” trick, she runs to her “house” and lies down and waits while Diana gets her purple octopus toy all revved up for her! I’m very excited to see what this team has in store for the future.

I’m honored to be a small part of this team’s journey in evaluating their titles.

Congratulations!

Last Thursday, we said goodbye to our beloved Gus.

Gustavo Not Without My Gouda TKN RL1, 11.5.2006-2.19.2026

When we set out to adopt a senior dog in 2016, I didn’t expect him to be with us for too long. But we belonged to each other for over nine years, almost half his life.

Gus showed us that time doesn’t always move in a straight line. He seemed to age in reverse, both physically and in his embrace of the sort of recklessness reserved for those far less mature. He had so few bad days, even when choices or circumstances might have indicated otherwise. There were only brave days and good days, according to Gus.

Over the years, Gus’s life became an impeccably curated collection of pleasures.

Of all the fine cheeses he savored, Gouda was his favorite. Every year on his birthday, he got a homemade blueberry muffin. He loved to play the piano, running up the little steps to the piano bench to fill the house with his music. He loved baths and pedicures and wearing his bathrobe. He was deeply passionate about riding his pool floats in the summer. He loved Rally, but competitions conflicted with his precious nap schedule. He earned his WCRL Level 1 title at age 17, after he lost his sight.

Full of surprises, he made new friends, both human and canine, in the last years of his life. He wrestled with his beloved sisters until just a few days ago.

We love you and miss you, Gus. ❤️

The snow, ice, and very cold temperatures in Ohio required us to suspend our outdoor activities.

Despite my best efforts, the boredom and restlessness reached epic levels. Tycho got himself swirled into such a state that he started asking for a bath by standing in the shower. I obliged and he was grateful for the fleeting excitement. 🛁

Happy Friday, friends! 🥰

Please join me in congratulating Sumi and Diana on earning their AKC Trick Dog Performer (TKP) title!

The theme for their Performer routine is laundry day. I think my favorite trick was “a dirty shame.” Diana picks up a dirty sock, sniffs it, and her “disgusted” facial expression is the cue for Sumi to lie down and put her paw over her nose! Sumi also does a tremendous job of carrying a basket of clothespins in her mouth while performing several other tricks. So impressive and inspiring!

I’m honored to be a small part of this team’s journey in evaluating their titles.

Congratulations!

My logo features Mulligan, happy and smiling. I finally got a stretched canvas to finish my little garage training space in Ohio.

I started this project last year. I primed and painted the walls and ceiling, refinished the two cabinets, put down some rubber mats, and added some equipment.

Even as an online trainer, it’s meaningful to me that the physical spaces where I train, video, and teach are bright and inviting. And Mulligan is always here with us, ready for fun. 💖

Please join me in congratulating Henry and Catherine on earning their AKC Trick Dog Intermediate (TKI) and Advanced titles (TKA)!

I loved Henry’s “sad dog” trick! When Catherine says, “sad dog,” Henry puts his chin on the floor and looks up. But it takes a few seconds for his tail to stop wagging! So adorable!

I’m honored to be a small part of this team’s journey in evaluating their titles.

Congratulations!

Last weekend, Tycho and I drove to Dublin, Ohio, to try Rally Flash. We’d entered on a whim just two days before, and practiced in the garage for exactly 11 minutes total. Rally Flash is a newer thing. There are no sits or downs involved, making it easier on Tycho’s hips.

We managed to earn two qualifying scores toward our Flash 1 title, and placed 2nd and 3rd when we weren’t disqualifying ourselves. Most importantly, we had fun visiting a new place, and trying something new together!

Thank you to CleverDogs for putting on a great little trial! We can’t wait to come back!

Please join me in congratulating Gertie and her person, Kate, on earning their AKC Trick Dog Novice title (TKN)!

My favorite tricks were Gertie’s spins. Kate chose “wax on” as a cue for one direction, and “wax off” for the other! Gosh, I love creative cues!

I’m honored to be a small part of this team’s journey in evaluating their title.

Congratulations! 💖🏆💖

Happy New Year!

When I think about 2026 and all that it might become, one word that keeps coming up for me is “more.”

I’m excited for more consistent scheduling, even as I work two jobs. I’m motivated to get more comfortable teaching in two different environments, as I split my time between Pennsylvania and Ohio. I’m committed to spending more time with my own eight dogs. And I’m determined to find more courage in the face of nonsense, to make dogs’ lives better.

I know 2026 will be tender, too. Gus turned 19 years old in November. He’s blind and almost totally deaf now. My days are full of bittersweet moments. I want more of them, as many as possible.

Wishing you and your dogs all the “more” this year! 💖
