This concept of expectations is so important in my work with people with dogs and children. To use another great phrase from Shryock of Family Paws Parent Education, "You know what you know, and then you grow"
“I grew up with dogs—I know how they are with kids.”
We hear this all the time. And yes, growing up with dogs does give you some experience—but it’s not the same as parenting with dogs in the home while raising a newborn or toddler.
Life with babies, toddlers, and dogs is a whole new dynamic—one that calls for fresh awareness, updated skills, and a deeper understanding of our dogs’ behavior and communication.
At Family Paws Parent Education, we gently challenge the “I already know” mindset and encourage ongoing learning.
Why? Because dogs change as they age, and babies change constantly. Each stage brings new opportunities—and new challenges—for everyone in the home.
We help families tune into their dog’s body language, respect their sensitivities, and better understand their needs.
Let’s replace assumptions with awareness.
Let’s raise Dog Aware® generations—together.
