It is amazing what the horses body knows and what it teaches us daily. This horse presented to our clinic on January 9 for a large wound over the metatarsal bone. The wound was too extensive and damaged to be closed with suture. A bandage was placed immediately on the leg after the injury and bandage changes were performed daily for 10 days after the injury. We knew the bone was compromised due to the color change and how dry the surface of the bone became over the first few days but we didn’t know how much was compromised. We decided to wait to see if the granulation tissue would heal over the bone. If it didn’t continue to heal over the bone, we knew we would have to remove the dead piece of bone so the wound would continue to heal. We planned to remove the compromised bone on Monday the 16th . The day before on the 15th we decided to change the bandage and clean the wound and in that process, we found that the compromised piece of bone was starting to separate. This was great news because the horse’s body had already separated the dead piece of bone from the healthy bone below. There was a nice healthy layer of granulation tissue between the healthy bone and the dead bone. If any dead piece of bone is left behind and the wound closes the dead piece of bone acts as a foreign body and continues to produce an open wound with drainage until it is removed.

HORSE OWNER WEBINAR ALERT! 📢

Join us for the first Horse Owner Education Committee webinar of 2026! Our topic will be "Equine Dentistry – A Closeup Look Inside Your Horse’s Mouth."

If you've ever wondered what your veterinarian is looking for inside your horse’s mouth, this is your chance to find out! Learn what makes horse teeth unique and why oral exams and odontoplasty, or “floating,” are performed. We’ll also review what to expect during a dental appointment, common pathologies and diseases, and how dental management will often change as your horse ages.

Registration is FREE but required. A recording of the webinar will be available if you miss the live event. Register at: https://events.zoom.us/ev/Au79KIEGlUQNYp3MIwhImixtX96-V_4BY6zUczb-JyUAmnaMAMOO~AmWA7Q-adjl446fnk29Fr5TyD20L79wemxDsn628LwZjZ4BHVqqEh-rjTA
