βThe two hardest things to say in life is hello for the first time and goodbye for the last."
Little Red came to us a couple years ago as a repetitive rescue case. He found himself in family home after family home taking care of kids and grandkids then finding himself forgotten. Over and over again. When asked if we would take him on, it was with the promise that we would be his LAST home and he would NEVER go hungry again.
Turning 30 this year, we knew his time with us would not be much longer. While he was in great weight and decent spirits, we had a plan to let him go on a good day with his bestie this Fall. Unfortunately, Red's body had other plans.
Over the weekend, Red began to show signs of colic. We started supportive treatment and he responded immediately. However, as the weekend progressed, his body began showing signs of crossing over and we had to make the hard call. When our wonderful vet arrived, Red was given a final resting spot under his favorite tree.
We loved getting to watch him fatten up and show off his quirky personality for the time he was with us. Every day rescues have to make tough calls like these time after time. And it never gets easier.
If I can give one PSA, when you have a horse or pony who has given you EVERYTHING or nothing at all and you're debating letting them go, don't wait until they are having a bad day. Let them go comfortably and in total peace. I wish we could have honored that promise more than anything but I am grateful we were able to be there for him to the very end π
Rest easy Little Red. You were so loved β€οΈ
